I agree, cinematically they hit all points of a zombie outbreak, from a corporate thriller, urban outbreak, the brink of extinction, post-survival, and global conspiracy. I'll always say Retribution is the last decent adaptation, as no one took later films to heart. It at least tried to emulate what the alternate universe established thus far. It's enough inspiration until the live action reboot next year which will also be combining elements of the 1st and 2nd game as Apocalypse tries with 2 and 3.

Loved how upbeat this review was, acknowledging the negatives while not letting it sour you. It's a tough film for me as I love Jill and how she's portrayed - she got the great tense horror scenes you'd hope to see. Then "I'm never leaving this franchise" smashes through a church window on a motorcycle and makes sure the film stays C or D-level schlock. Although it's not a clean cut, Alice's ridiculous action storyline with goofy Nemesis vs Jill's tense horror really showcases the film's jeckyl and hyde. As you said, it felt like 2 directors directed parts of the film separately. Great review!

Once thing that would be cool for a non-RE game, is take all of the good ideas in that movies that go nowhere, and actually do something with them. Like all the Alice clones? Those could be your lives. Each one could have slightly different powers.
@whodatninja4394 жыл бұрын
This movie needs a fanedit that removes Alice from the movie. One of the dumbest decisions ever is forcing her into the plot where she doesnt belong. Without her and the reliance on the first movie, it would be a decent RE movie. Jill should've always been the main character, and no she shouldnt smoke. Only Chris did that, in the PSX intro! Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake came out the same year, and is wayyyyy superior. It begins almost the same way as well! I forgot character actor Jared Harris from Chernobyl is in this!! Great casting. Unlike the other movies Anderson didnt direct this one, Alexander Witt did. I wonder if all the good parts of the movie come from him, and all the stupid shit from Anderson. The next ones are where they go off the rails into Looney Tunes territory... Good luck.

Well, Anderson did write it. So yeah. The dumb shit came from him. I hesitate to credit him too much for the competent parts on this one.
@oddball874 жыл бұрын
What baffles me is Anderson wrote all 6 films (only directing 1,5 and 6), yet he contradicted damn near everything he wrote in each one. And somehow, despite that, he's been given the directors chair on the Monster Hunter movie! The shame of it is, he has made decent movies in the past. Event Horizon, as shlocky as it is, is still an entertaining watch, and I love the original Mortal Kombat movie even though it hasn't aged well (though I will gladly admit I may be blinded by nostalgia a little on that one)
@whodatninja4394 жыл бұрын
The third movie isn't even a Resident Evil movie, it's just a bad Mad Max knockoff. Somehow the entire world turns into desert, but then the next movie, the world is back to normal??? And there are Alice clones and psychic powers and terrible adaptations of classic RE characters... Absolutely garbage. How can he keep making them? I wondered that myself so i did some snooping. Guess whenever he and his wife need more money he just throws together a cheaply made, fast produced video game movie. All of them barely turn in a profit domestically (the last one outright bombed) BUT overseas, especially in Asian countries, they are huge! From a budget of 40 million it made over 300 million dollars worldwide. Only 9% of that is domestic gross lol! ttps://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt2592614/?ref_=bo_se_r_2 The most memorable thing about the last RE movie, SADLY, is the story about Milla's stuntwoman Olivia Jackson who got HORRIFICALLY injured when Anderson and everyone involved botched a motorcycle stunt. I hope she sues everyone responsible and she gets justice. www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/death-injuries-amputations-is-resident-evil-hollywoods-dangerous-franchise-1244726 And even worse a crew member actually died in an on set accident! www.cinemablend.com/new/Crew-Member-Dies-Set-Resident-Evil-Final-Chapter-102307.html Absolutely garbage. What a shame. I love Event Horizon, it's a damn good movie. Mortal Kombat isn't good by any stretch, but i would argue it's the best video game movie still. It's just so damn fun and entertaining. The new MK games even reference it constantly.

@@oddball87 The first MK movie was great. It has its problems, but it's true to the source material, has a cast with great chemistry, works on its own as a movie, and has great atmosphere, style and fight scenes. 5:42 Yeah, Sienna Guillory was just PERFECT as Jill. But unfortunately Jovovich had married Paul WS Anderson and so RE movies became all about how cool the utterly non-cool Alice is, something that includes her out-staging all the actual characters from the games. Jill was the first victim: every time she tries to do something cool, it doesn't work and Alice steps in to save the day (the scene in the school's kitchen is a perfect example). This movie was mostly based on RE3 and Jill IS NOT EVEN NEMESIS' TARGET! Alice is! If that is not a huge middle finger to the original lore, I don't know what it is. 9:00 The head is big because there's an actual performer in the suit and they couldn't use anything of his actual face because of Nemesis' anatomy (no nose, no lips, exposed gums), so they essentially had to build a whole new head around the real one. I think the special effects are pretty good - considering how ludicrous Nemesis would look in real life, they did a pretty nice job. It's the characterization that sucks: he's essentially a cross between the Terminator, Robocop and the Frankenstein monster, while instead he's supposed to be a vicious and creepy stalker... 13:17 Well, believe or not, that stunt was real, no effects: it's in the BTS featurette on the DVD. Most of it was performed by a stunt double, but Jovovich did some bits. 14:14 As a working cinematographer who has done some horror and action stuff, I can assure you it's next-to-impossible to shoot a complex (or very fast-edited) action scene with a dark look - that's one of the reasons why the action in the 1989 Batman movie is so stiff: to keep that chiaroscuro, film-noir look, the actors need to hit their marks perfectly and the camera cannot be swung around much (actually, the more still it stays, the better: check "Skyfall", which is very much based around that type of look). Also, it's pretty evident that they didn't want a truly dark-looking picture: the images are very bright even when there's supposed to be high contrast. The director (Alexander Witt, who mostly works as 2nd unit director&cinematographer on Hollywood pictures and has a cameo as the sniper Alice knocks out) and editor tried to do their best by shooting it from every possible angle with a multitude of rigs and cutting a lot. As much as I hate the film series, I think you're being a bit unfair in dissecting this one.

I think your reactions to the first two RE movies are pretty fair and on point. But now the series loses its mind and gets way worse in 3, 4, and 6 being the absolute bottom of the barrel. Never have I seen a film series where EVERY single film retcons most if not all set up from the previous film. At least, not in a film series that has been written and directed by the same person every time. It's infuriating for almost every ending just being discarded as soon as the next film starts. Never mind the other story, character, and filming issues. I left out 5 because for some reason 5 feels like it leans so much into its insanity and acknowledging what it is to such a degree that for some reason I think it's a joy, at least compared to what 3 and 4 just were (or what 6 ended up being). I laughed a lot at 5, but I'm not sure how much of that was *intended* by the creative team.

Starting from 3, those movies cut basically all ties with the franchise. They feel awkward and completely out of place. The main reason for this is that Resident Evil media is not an apocalypse franchise. "Resident Evil" is about bioterrorism and there can be no terrorism in a world that is completely destroyed. Resident Evil Extinction is like "Walking Dead" bringing with itself new themes that are totally unrelated to Resident Evil.

What I appreciate with your takes is that they're entirely your own, honest, formed opinions whether they go with the crowd or not and that's something I also liked about your RE3 review (maybe that's just because I share the same opinions though and like feeling validated) I also have to agree that Nemesis looked terrible and genuinely like nothing more than a rubbery halloween mask thrown on an average guy in cosplay, and everyone lauds it as such a good appearance for him and some amazing special effects work probably due to how "true" it is to the game's model, but I don't think 1:1 trueness translates well in real life which is the same reason most cosplay costumes of early RE characters look off too. At least Jill looks like real-world clothes on a real person looking like that, and they should've took that response with Nemesis and created a really real looking horrifically mutated person instead of a rubber mask that resembles the face of the cutscenes. I thought he was the weakest part of this movie, and Jill of course being the best - but I don't think there's a single soul out there who doesn't agree that Sienna is a perfect Jill in both look and performance

1:57 An unintentionally funny part of the sequels is Alice saying she's going to stop Umbrella in the opening narrations but not doing that by the next film making it sound like she's just bragging.

The thing I hated most was Super Alice saving the day, LJ the annoying comic relief, Nemesis becoming a good guy and covering up a nuclear explosion with a nuclear meltdown. But there were some things that I enjoyed, especially the look of Raccoon City, Oded Fahr as Carlos, Nemesis being a man in a costume instead of CGI, the look of Jill Valentine, the soundtrack and some of the zombie action.

You will dread the next ones. They all seem to go downhill from here. The third one sharted on all that was even remotely good in the first to films. Apocalypse has its moments but the shitshow has just begun. Not to say I didn't "enjoy" the fan service they did in all the movies and sometimes even tried to get good again but as a whole it's all just so very stupid. I really hope the rumored Netflix series will be better.

My ranking of the RE movies: Apocalypse (closest to the games and Raccoon City was pretty cool to see) Resident Evil (simple three-act structure that feels the most complete as a stand-alone) Retribution (where they started to embrace the stupid action and just focused on making it as badass as possible) Extinction (total mad max ripoff and completely breaks the canon, but the zombie crows were cool) The Final Chapter (talk about jumping the shark, woof) Afterlife (just... no)

To prepare for her role, Sienna Guillory actually bought a PlayStation 1 Console and a copy of the game to study the Jill Valentine character. She also based her movements of Jill by watching the way Jill moved in the game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999). The movie uses elements of the plots of Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999). The dogs were not computer-generated. Just like with the first film make-up was applied to them, though it also proved troublesome to train the dogs to not kick off the makeup and prosthetic The character of Dr. Ashford is named after the Ashford family of the Resident Evil game series. However, unlike the sympathetic film character, the Ashfords of the games were villains. Although the word "zombie" is never used in the film, it is featured in the ending credits. German comedian Tom Gerhardt who portrayed the infected father in the gate closing sequence, is credited as "zombie dad". All other zombies are credited as "undead". at around 1h 10 mins) In the ending fight, the words "Finish him" are used, this is straight from the Mortal Kombat games, Paul W.S. Anderson also directed the Mortal Kombat (1995) movie. Sienna Guillory is a natural blonde. To play the brunette Jill Valentine, she had to dye her hair a dark brown. Michelle Latimer's debut. Nikolai is one of villains in Resident Evil: Nemesis. However he is portrayed as a hero. Mikhail from the games is replaced by original character Yuri. Oded Fehr is of Israeli descent, however, Carlos Oliviera is Brazilian (His ethnicity is ambiguous but rumoured to be Pardo or Native Brazilian. His surname is Portugese.) The cement truck that smashed into the umbrella SUV is like the cement truck in resident evil 3 the video game At the beginning that separated Jill and Leon When the group escapes the building after Alice's showdown with Nemesis, former Evanescence drummer Rocky Gray is one of the undead in the mob that storm the rooftop right before the missile hits. (at around 8 mins) The newspaper with the headline "The Dead Walk!" is an homage to George A. Romero's Day of the Dead (1985), in which exactly the same newspaper headline was displayed. Oded Fehr had little difficulty in playing a character so familiar with handling guns - he was trained in the Israeli army. at around 39 mins) "STARS" is the only word ever spoken by the Nemesis, it's also the only word he ever speaks (repeatedly) in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999). The suit for Nemesis weighed in excess of 60 pounds. Stuntman Matthew G. Taylor could only stay in it for periods of up to 15 minutes before it got too hot. As in the first film, the zombies were mainly all professional dancers. They attended an "undead boot camp" where two of the cardinal rules were no dragging feet and no outstretched arms. The word Biohazard appears many times in the movie. This is a reference to the Japanese versions of the games. In Japan the series of games is called Biohazard.

Apocalypse made me question my life choices when I saw it as a young man, but I've recently softened on it after watching it on Netflix. I thought it was the worst Resident Evil-related piece of media at the time, but we all know how low the brand has sunk a few times since 2004., haha.

"And maybe I'm not scared of that concept as much as before." *Cue D.C. Douglas doing Wesker quoting Yoda* "You will be. You . . . will be." Still my favorite of the films for all the reasons as before: Nailed the horror, and while stupid, still had fun, entertaining action sequences (and an amazing casting for Jill). My one major F-Off moment of the film came from Jill's intro, specifically a newspaper clipping: They killed off Leon off-screen. (Which, if you know how this movie handles it's own canon starting with 3 going forward . . . Better off unsaid for now).

My only guess about why Nemesis's head is so big is so that the actor can breathe inside the mask. (Nemesis was apparently played by TV actor and stuntman, Matthew G Taylor, who has been in a surprising number of movies that I've actually seen.)

I only recently found your stuff, but I'm really enjoying it so far: i've watched all your Resi stuff and most of your SH stuff so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing more! As for the Resi movies . . . not gonna lie, I unapologetically love these things. As you say yourself, they're not the greatest works of film ever made, nor are they accurate to the games at all, but they're all of them -- save one -- fun enough experiences to sit back and enjoy, either for their atmosphere (which is usually executed well regardless of other issues,) or simply the silly fun of the action scenes, that are the American equivalent of b-list kung fu. A quick primer for the next few films: Armageddon is slow and takes itself too seriously, but gets better with repeat viewings, once you know to go into it with that in mind. Afterlife has about the cheesiest, shittiest opening you can imagine, before turning into a really kickass zombie film. Retribution is utter ass. Just . . . seriously. You don't know how lucky we were the others are even remotely as good as they are until you see Retribution. It does a lot to try and fill in some of the plot holes in the films (at least one of which you picked up on at the end of this film, and yes, they do give reason it can sort-of work,) but in general what you get is a series of set pieces with absolutely no worthwhile plot to really connect them and a few wasted cameos of game series characters. The Final Chapter, on the other hand, turns things around quite a bit. It pulls an Alien 3 at the start, which is kinda shitty, but then turns into a virtual reprise of a lot of what made Apocalypse and Afterlife so good, AKA focusing mostly on the zombie survival stuff first and foremost. As someone who's regularly watched all the movies 2-3 times a year since each has come out, I'm looking forward to seeing your take on them all. Oh, and you really should have ripped the graveyard scene much more than you did, because by in-universe rules for the films the virus transmits through liquid, air, or contact, changing phase based on need, and there's really no justifiable reason it could have or should have infected all the buried corpses, especially ones so worm-riddled that cracking their skull open spills *literal* worms all over the place rather than brain juice. That said, it's far from the biggest disappointment you're going to face on this journey. Good luck, and godspeed.

This is the one i remember watching the most.. for some reason. I haven't seen it a lot, but I have watched it more than once. I remember thinking it was ok. More exciting than the 1st, and not quite as dumb and over the top as the others, from what I remember. At this point I don't even know if I've seen them all. I still thinking a series that follows a different game each season would work well.

I am attempting to adapt the first Resident Evil videogame into a film. It will be set during the Arklay Lab Incident and will follow the Special Task And Rescue Service as they go searching for their companion team, The Bravo Team in the outskirts of Raccoon City out in the woods. More importantly, it will follow JILL VALENTINE as she and the team that she is in get ambushed by the undead within a mansion that is a mixture of deathtrap, the undead, creatures, and a few puzzles. Anyway, I included a few new additions to the overall story. One of the new additions are two new S.T.A.R.S. teams, Beta and Delta. Delta was the first to go searching for the missing hikers. The Beta was the last to go searching for them. All four teams enter The Mansion at different times. I also added ADA WONG who enters The Mansion to retrieve a sample of The T-Virus. Plus, a group of SPECIAL AGENTS of Umbrella who, in the near-aftermath of the chaos, looks for survivors within The Mansion Incident.
