It wouldn't be Halloween without a scary game review, and I have one this year with a twist! We've all played or at least know about the original resident evil, but did you know it was ported to the Nintendo DS? I'm not sure why people have a hard time with tank controls. it was Silent Hill 1 that taught me this skill a few years back that I adapted to them very quickly. I don't find them hard to master at all like many people complain about.

I agree. In a game that uses fixed camera's, tank controls are generally required for me.

Because it's extremely unintuitive to have the controls vary depending on which way your character happens to be facing. Yes, your character always responds the same way, but... If the camera is behind your character and you want to turn to the left side of the room, you press left. On the other hand, if the camera is in front of you and you want to turn to the left side of the room, you need to press right. Pushing up will make you walk toward the camera and pushing down will make you back away. When facing the camera the controls are completely the opposite of what your instinct tells you they are. You'll be running away from the camera, running around obstacles, then the view switches to show your character from the front, and suddenly you have to press in the opposite direction from way you want to go.

It's way more unintuitive to not be in tank controls when the cameras are fixed. As example, It's super common to happen at the Remake HD You press forward to go forward and once the camera changes the character goes back to where you just came from and the camera changes again changing directions again and all you did is press a single direction.

Theres a disconnect that people dont get. When running between screens they think you have to know where youre going. Its called being used to the waypoint marker all this time, not tanl controls and ramdom cam angles!

The slowdown pictured was actually meant to simulate water resistance as you're wading through the flooded Neptune Tank.

Resident Evil DS was my first experience with the series actually. I missed out on the original, as I was a wee lad at the time. Heck I was still a kid when I played Deadly Silence, but I was able to complete it with no problem. Tank controls were no issue, it's was a great game. In fact I far prefer it to Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube, my second RE experience.

Probably the best version of the original RE1 out there. It doesn't have the unsettling and scary colorized intro FMV, and the graphics aren't quite as good, but with all of the quality-of-life improvements in the game It's hard not to recommend it. 180-degree turns, tactical reloads, knife mapped to the L-button and never in the inventory, an always visible map, cute little touch-screen gags (like poking Chris and Jill) and an easier more accessible difficulty in Rebirth Mode makes this game so great to play. It's also the easiest way to play the original version of the game nowadays, as the PSone and Saturn aren't always the most convinent consoles to set up with modern TVs.

4:24 even though it's an old game every time you start playing it you get sucked innto the amazing world of RE1. Suddenly the simpler backgrounds and animation and less polygons gives it character and the music creates amazing armosthere. It's literally like watching a classic zombie movie like the first Evil Dead or any classic George Romero films. They are simple and old and low budget but even more amazing than ever.

Good review. I have this game for my DS, probably got it back in the day. I just recently got "Resident Evil: Revelaitons" for the 3DS(yes, I misspelled the title, because I got the ultra-rare first release)and the game is good. Love the shirt! That would be the REAL Ghostbusters. ;)

I find the tank controls significantly easier to deal with by mapping turns to the the shoulder buttons instead of the analog stick. But I'm playing the PS1 version with the True Director's Cut mod.

This game has no slowdown, I believe you were mistaken as you were playing footage of the flooded labs section of the game. The slowdown there is in every version and is most likely intentional, to make it feel like the water is slowing your movement down. Also, as for moving corpses when you step over them, that only happens with zombies that are lying on the floor but aren't actually dead, that feature seems to be intentional aswell and appears on all versions.

Skipping the door animations does ruin the atmosphere a bit, but that was only really atmospheric when you first enter a room without knowing what was on the other side. Every time after that, it was just tedious, especially if you went through a door and realised you had to go back for whatever reason, and had to wait for it to play the animation all over again.

I'm such a diehard Resident Evil fan and while personally Resident Evil 2 is my all time favorite (William Birkin is a fantastic boss(es) and I loved how the game progresses) there's no deny how awesome Resident Evil is and I own the Director's Cut on PS1 and the REmake on Wii. I dunno why I'm compelled for it, but def thinking of getting the DS version since it's like $15-18. For some reason it's just one of my top five favorite (if not , my #1 favorite) franchise of my gaming history. Great review of it btw, even if i'm getting in late to the party!

I love the idea of the Resident Evil games, I like the atmospheric graphics and I can even accept the cheesy dialog. Unfortunately I can't deal with the horrible controls. Yes, I understand how they work, but when you're trying to quickly guide your character around obstacles, it's just not intuitive or instinctual to have to press a different direction other than the one you actually want to go in. Such controls don't lend themselves to fast action sequences like trying to run away from zombies. And beyond the tank controls, it's like the designers tried to make the interface as cumbersome as possible. Why do you have to stop and aim the gun? Why can't there be one key that aims and shoots? Chaos Break is quite similar to Resident Evil, but the controls are much more intuitive. Sure, when the camera switches, there's a moment where you're moving in the wrong direction because the controls are based on the screen, not your character, but I find it infinitely more playable than the RE games. I also hate Resident Evil for inspiring the idea that survival horror games have to have fixed camera angles, even in later games where there's no technical reason for it, since the maps are fully 3D. To put this in perspective, they build fully 3D engines capable of perfectly following the player, and then they intentionally cripple the camera. And for someone who says that they never had trouble using tank controls, I noticed a few instances in the video where you were running into walls, or stopping to re-orient yourself. :)

@@ShaunBaaSheep Fixed camera angles came about because early games couldn't render 3D environments in real time. So they used hand-drawn backgrounds with 3D characters on top of them. Also, the idea didn't start with Alone in the Dark, there were games for older 8-bit systems that used characters animated over mostly static backgrounds to give the illusion of 3D. Maybe they weren't as elaborate as the later games, but they pioneered the technique. One of my biggest annoyances is games that have a 3D camera, but go to fixed cameras at certain points in the game. Tomb Raider 4, 5 and Angel of Darkness all had sections where the camera was not only fixed, but they disabled your ability to use a first-person view to look around. TR5 had a sequence where you were expected to run around a maze of desks while being shot at by a helicopter. For this part, they fixed the camera angle so you were viewing it from the side (and a little up). That section was rage inducing for me as I kept getting stuck on the damn desks.

The slowdown you encounter in the water isn't even a slowdown at all. It's copying the feel or RE4 when you walk in the water. Nothing wrong with the frames in this game.

I played this game so much as a teen! Though I did just mess around with codebreaker and didn’t really play it. I actually dusted off my old ds and am playing right now with a wiped save to play correctly. Though honestly seeing this amazing port makes me wish Dino Crisis got a DS port. Something like Dino Crisis Desperate Survival or something. I was more into that series as a kid

P.s. I can understand 1st time players, but imo i'd say the ds port is for any of the collectors that really enjoyed the heck outta the original PSone classic/likely probably the Saturn version too. Whereas the Gamecube version is more of course for anybody (yet agian with th HD remake as well) 1st 1st 1st time who wants to experience slightly remixed fresh from ground up horror experience.

It's very weird seeing the original Resident Evil after playing the remake. Areas in the original are a lot more basic and dated. But as far as ports of the original go, I would say the DS offers the most features. Kinda wish they ported RE2 instead which is a massive improvement in every single way.

danhedgehog That's not lag, it's intended to simulate you slowing down in water and it's there in every version. RE2 does something similar, but instead of cutting the framerate of animations it decreases movement speed by 1/3.

Great review Michael! Perfect game towards the time of Halloween~I always heard of this port from a friend whom really enjoyed it but never got around to playing it. Regardless of the slow frame rate of times doesn't seem that bad so perhaps I will check into it as I haven't beat the original game myself. Also I wanted to ask if you have ever played/heard of a survival horror/murder investigating game called "Deadly Premonition" I would totally recommend it even with all of it's problems and was curious what you would think of it.

Miikeman7 I gave deadly premonition another try yesterday and after 5 i was loving it. the first time i played this game i just couldn't get into it. the game has it's problems but there is just something awesome about DP that i cant put into words yet. Hi Michael, have you considered this years halloween game review? I'd love to see what you think of ghost master (2003) on the PC, the PS2 version (2004) has alot of features cut out. I love the scaring aspect of this game but find the puzzles impossible without a walk through, it is very clever though. -Mark

Still haven't played ds version of this still want to. I have the "Director's Cut dual shock" version (which is my favorite) save for it didn't include the uncensored feats we were promised, some of the music (in my case not all but at least some) that was changed and to me most importantly, it didn't include Advance mode or at least renamed that particular mode and put it into the game.

Jak Mar i noticed midway threw recording game play footage that i forgot to change the blood color setting, but i decided to leave it green as it looked cool. i did think about talking about the blood color, but with the review run getting close to 18 minutes i decided not to talk about it. if there is anything you felt i should i talked about, i most likely cut it out to keep the video length as short as possible.

I just added this day version to my phone's.....yes very cheesy acting it's not great but not bad at all for what it is I've had the remake first and beat that one now onto this one and I have had the remake for GameCube PS4 and switch...... Nintendo always does ports the best like they did this one,....I'm so happy to have the ds version on my phone's!!!!! Very hd on my blue smartphone and my other hd phone!!!!!! I'm hooked I wanted to try this over the years honestly remake and this are both great!!!!!!! Great review!!!!!! And music is nice......it's a classic that can't be passed and it runs smoothly!!!!! Along with super Mario DS Mario party ds and clock tower 2!!!!!! All still great looking and fun games!!!!! I'm so happy to have this ds version to my collection!!!!!!!
