I love Ethan because he IS lame as hell. He's the epitome of cringe dad, exactly as he should be. He's just some guy instead of super soldier secret agent like most of the regular RE protags. Which to me goes perfectly with the first person version of campiness, better fits the player as a stand in.

It was only the games after 4 that tried to be overly serious. RE 1 - 4 were campy and goofy af or did people forget about the giant zombie snakes, sharks, and spiders in RE 1? I'd say 7 and 8 definitely brought it back.

I always felt that the comedy in 1 resulted from serious or genuine moments that weren't exactly well written, so they come across funny instead. Then they have to own that in the rest kinda so they don't look like total fools.

@@Sm0k3turt The scare fell flat for me as well, unfortunately. I think its pinacle of horror, was really the initial introduction to it in the hallway. It is bizzare and off-putting, but then it starts laughing and talking like a baby, and it becomes absurd and laughable, and the initial unease evaporates. Also, it has absolutely zero tension. It is an incredibly linear segment, where there really is only one good way to go about it, and you almost have to go out of your way to fail and die, which makes it have no agency, no threat, no presence.

​@@silentbook4468I disagree completely, but maybe that's just because I'm a giant pussy when it comes to horror games lmao, the distorted cries and laughing made it feel really weird and uncanny and it unnerved me even more, yeah the segment overall was pretty linear but even just navigating around that thing in such a closed, confined space made me anxious AF, not to mention the little elevator sequence near the end, man, that entire basement was fucking terryfiyng, its not something I expected in a RE game of all games and its really no wonder it left such an impression on people, however, I can understand how something so creepy and traumatizing can be weird and goofy for someone else tbh.
