Zachary Tan I learned that through Did you know gaming series. I played the Dreamcast version when I was 15 too. But i got stuck at the end of the game and resarted two years ago in an emulator for ps2 on the pc and finally ended it :P

idk, they're pretty easy to learn and I think it adds to the tension. Just look at the level design, the game would be piss easy if the controls were like a typical third person shooter.

Only tank-controls work reliably with fixed angles and only fixed angles allow for pre-rendered backgrounds that were necessary in times of shitty 3D. I doubt that it was about making it harder. That limitation made RE as much it made Silent Hill (fog allows to "frontload" polygons to make 3D-models bearable, same as 2D backgrounds do).

***** If you're talking to me, I don't know if I agree with you about the first statement (the first half). Most fixed camera games I've played were either point-and-click adventures, or had tank controls, but games like FFX had fixed camera angles and regular controls worked just fine as well. Even in games like TT's Walking Dead had fixed camera angles and no tank controls and it was just fine. I believe it all depends on the experience the developers want you to have. I wasn't trying to say they put those controls in to be harder, I'm just saying it feels right for that sort of thing. But I do stand by my statement that RE would have been way easier if they didn't have the tank controls, especially when you're playing as Chris where you spend a lot more time avoiding/maneuvering around the enemies instead of actually trying to kill every single one.

"No", what ? That's a game-design _fact_. With "fixed" camera and camera-relative movement you get direction-remap on every camera change. That really sucks. And Honest Trailer Guy complained that MGS controls "are bad", same as some "fans", the controls that are fucking perfect. People are full of shit and don't know what they need. That's why proper game designers don't listen and do what they think is right.

I will never understand people who compare a survival horror game to a psychological horror game. Stop the dumb fanboy war between Resident Evil and Silent Hill. There is no doubt that of course a psychological horror game would probably be more intricate in story telling and would be more terrifying because it involves the dark parts of our human psyche. I love Resident Evil, (still Code Veronica X/RE4/RE2 are my favorite in the franchise) and it's soundtrack, the good old typewriters and needing an ink ribbon to save. I love having the memories of when I would panic if I didn't have enough ink ribbons and worry if I should save or instead wait. I enjoyed the characters of Wesker, Chris, Jill, Claire, and Leon. Alexia Ashford or Salazar were interesting bosses to fight. Nothing beats the scare of seeing Tyrant or Nemesis the first time around. Yes though Silent Hill is partly a survival horror game as well and without a doubt when it comes to story telling, set the bar high, specifically with Silent Hill 2. Even today, I think the Silent Hill franchise, especially its gems of 1,2 and 3, have one of the best soundtracks of all time.
