When I was on active duty and stationed at Nellis AFB flying the F-16 Viper (1981 - 1985) we would fly against the aggressor sqs. At that time the aggressors were flying F-5s - it was some of the best air-to-air training I ever had in my 26 yrs of flying fighters for the USAF!
@Carlos27thFS Жыл бұрын
So how did the Viper do against the 14, 15, or 18 in a2a?
@carlparlatore294 Жыл бұрын
@@Carlos27thFS We did very well - not just bravado but fact - at Nellis we had a number of opportunities to do DACT - Dissimilar Air Combat Tactics - our Sq., the 429 TFS, also worked it out with Red Flag that if they needed RED Air we would be happy to fill that role. I can recall a number of missions with the Eagle and one or two with the 14 but really don't have any memory of the 18. The Viper, if flown right was a very dangerous adversary - you really needed to pay attention to radar missiles - or else you would get shot in the lips - but we worked out some very clever tactics to allow us to get close and if we got to the merge without getting hit, then we ate them like a grape! ONE BIG DANGER - the Viper could very easily kill you with GLOC - and I am sad to say we lost several very good pilots and friends that way - my God rest their souls.

One of the perks in some units playing OpFor roles is the slightly more lax uniform and grooming regulations. Had a buddy whose infantry battalion was pegged for aggressor role during an upcoming exercise. The CO allowed them all to grow their hair and beards out the month leading up to a 2 week exercise in the mountains and dress in civilian attire as they were portraying an insurgent force during the exercise. I got a good laugh looking at the photos of guys wearing cowboy hats, flannel shirts, and jeans he showed me. They also had to portray local populace too as part of counter insurgency training and be hostile (but not violent) towards the unit being trained to portray an unhappy populace. Apparently they had a blast yelling insults at their brothers in arms from rooftops while chucking empty soda cans at walls to spook them.

Our RAF were at a huge disadvantage with the Tornado F3 in BFM / DACT during exercises like Red Flag. The Typhoon has done wonders for firstly a better weapons platform with adaptable electronic integration etc, but being able to mix it up with F-15, F-16 , F-18 , Rafale, Gripen and even F-22 during so called "friendly" training 😉 & come out with a respectable reputation

@marleycummins1675 Жыл бұрын
@@JamesJoyce12 This isn't true? The f22s largely lose all of their stealth capabilities when bays are opening, munitions firing etc and the RAF typhoon is equipped with superior heat seeking/thermal technology in close to medium ranges. The f22 is designed to destroy aircraft from a distance whilst maintaining a minimal radar presence etc, whilst the typhoon is designed (whilst being a jack of all trades) first and foremost for dogfights. At close range, the typhoon wipes the f-22, with superior turning capabilities, sustained flight at high G's, far more capable when it comes to high altitude operations as well as a higher maximum altitude. Two aircraft designed for somewhat interchangeable but different roles, and both aircraft could destroy the other in its specialisation. The f-22 would realistically have a 30-40 second lead on the typhoon before the roles were most likely reversed and the raptor has a typhoon up it's tail. Edit: typo

So, you know its the F-16, right? It's got this one big engine, but it's not like that to save fuel or anything. Usually, you'd have two engines in case one goes kaput. But the F-16? It's crazy fast and super agile, making it the top dog in the American fighter jet lineup. It's built to shine in those high-speed dogfights. Now, when you're up there flying, your main worries are SAMs (Surface-to-Air Missiles) and AARAMs (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles). If one of these bad boys is coming at you, you've gotta do this thing called "janking." You dive down real fast, use some countermeasures, and hope the Earth's curve messes with the radar, keeping you hidden. But if that doesn't work, you go Plan B: fly sideways to the missile and try to out-turn it as it gets closer. While you're doing that fancy flying, you also use countermeasures to confuse the missile's tracking system. If the missile loses track of you for too long, it'll just self-destruct. Pretty wild, huh?
