Residential Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Requirements (2019 CA Building Code/2018 IRC)

This video reviews the Smoke & Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm requirements as it relates to the placement, hard-wired v.s. battery operated and other requirements. I hope you find the information useful.

In the video you stated I believe correctly that on split level with no doors a detector is only required on the upper level. However in the graphic you placed the detector on what appears to be the lower level.

Hi Zac. Great catch. Although the graphic shows the device on the lower level, in terms of floor level, compared to the other split level; the placement is accurate, in terms installing the device on the higher (upper) ceiling of the split levels, where first traces of smoke will be detected. In this video, you mentioned that smoke alarms are to be installed IN bedrooms and then you indicated that smoke alarms are to be installed OUTSIDE sleeping areas. I thought you were going to say "OR". Do they need to be installed BOTH inside the bedrooms and outside of them?

The Code (model code and CA state code) require smokies "in each sleeping room" and "outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms." that is verbatim out of the codes. So, in both in/outside bedrooms. I hope this helps. IRC/CRC Section R314.3
