Coastal Scituate, Massachusetts, experienced some of the worst impacts from 2018's nor'easters, with multiple instances of coastal flooding. As sea level rises and storm activity increases, residents are going to have to decide whether the place they love is worth it. (Originally published August 1, 2018)

Ever since Hurricane Sandy, it’s like every Nor’easter or storm hits, there always a problem!

This looks like a case of building right on the ocean front and having inadequate sea defences. The UK get hit by at least one severe windstorm every couple of years but rarely do we get coastal flooding like shown here, because the buildings are a few meters above sea level, and the sea walls have a curved profile to deflect the wave energy back out to sea. They also seem to do this in the sub-tropics where hurricanes are a threat, and every direct hit the beachfront homes are reduced to matchwood by the storm surge. You can't reduce the risk of severe storms, but you can reduce your vulnerability by building structures that are resistant to wind and water, or if that is not possible, don't build structures there at all.

Correct! You have common sense and the rich idiots who built these homes right on the edge of the ocean do not!
@msruag

that's partially true but most of these houses are very, VERY old and they did not have weather phenomena that were so severe that this happened every single winter 😭it's both the lack of infrastructure and the manmade change of the global climate and sea level rise that contributes to scituate's problem

For people who deride seaside homeowners in Scituate MA I wish to tell you most of those houses were in place since the 19th Century or replaced houses that were. Storms I remember we're '67, '72, and '78.

The houses could have been there since 1600, it doesn't matter, sooner or later nature hits and tries to take back and get rid of what shouldn't be there.

Humans have to live by water..... Thousands and thousands of years we have set up at the coats, river Banks, lakes, if there is water there will be life....... But mother nature will take back what she wants... It's certainly a double edge sword

This is weird, if rising sea level is impacting MA then why is Key West not impacted by rising sea level. Key West should be impacted, right. Can someone explain that?

Whoever thinks this is propaganda hasn't lived in this area for 25 years and whose family has lived here for almost 80 years. The entire coastline is different. We used to drive down to the beach (Nantasket) during storms to watch the angry seas, because it was a fun thing to do. Now, at times you can't even access the town during storms. In 2018, the town of Hull, MA lost all communication for a week straight. No phones, internet, cell phone towers, nothing. The army was there, the national guard was there. Nobody had ever seen anything like it, even during the historic Blizzard of 78.. And that type of thing is becoming normal. Our historic "once-in-a-lifetime" Blizzard of 78 is becoming a once every 5 year storm. Soon it will be a yearly thing. Summers are now completely subtropical, like South Carolina. Heading to Bermuda for a week is now a way to get relief from the summer heat, when it used to be a tropical getaway. Sh*t's changing, and it's changing a lot. There are banana trees growing in my yard, and I'm 20 minutes south of Boston. This isn't normal!!

all that salt water will ruin everything. why would you live there? I know I would’nt! I live in inland Australia, 350 km from the Pacific, it’s close enough for me, lol. I am an ex seaman but never wished to live near the sea, I know what it can do!
