Demonstration Only
Purple Storm Resin & Mica. Harking back to the mytic series with negative space, mica cells and even a bit of stranding.
Note: Noisy rain on my studio roof so turn down volume if you need to.
Stay safe and take appropriate safety measures when working with resin and pigment powders.

Thanks -- that will be my next try. I'm having a blast, but some things still trip me up. Having this help means a great deal, and I just want you to know that. I told my friend in Philly about you, and she said "I love it when someone gives of their knowledge so freely".......I agree! Although I wish there was some way to give back to you.

Aw Barbara that is lovely. I enjoy helping and I believe that most people are the same. I don’t do this for commercial gain, just the pleasure of creating.

Thank you Kandi-O. The heat gun is an Ozito HGN 2100. I like it because it has a low heat setting so you can control it a lot more. I treat it like a hairdryer. LOL

This is so beautiful TFS I do have a question I hope you can help me with I just started using the envirotex Lite resin and I only used it once so far but the one time I did use it it started curing before I had all my colors on my canvas and I read all the directions can you please tell me what you do to get so much working time out of yours it's supposed to be 30 minutes at least I didn't even get 10 minutes

This has come up quite a bit lately. There are a lot of different factors so a bit tricky to say without watching what you did. This is my process. Firstly I am working quite small so I only mix 300mls at a time. I pour the measured part A into part B and mix slowly for about 2.5 mins I then transfer to another cup and mix using a clean stick for another min. I then transfer to the cups with the colour and mix them until the colour has totally dispersed. If I need more than 300mls I put what I have on the board and mix more. I set a timer and have between 20-30mins depending on the room temp. I suppose the important thing to me is to get it out of the original mixing container and not scrapping out every skerrick (which might include unmixed part B on the walls of the original mixing container. Resin reacts in a J curve. Starts off slow and then the reaction quickens so if it is still in the original cup any unmixed part B will get super hot.

The other thing is to keep an eye on the temperature of the resin. I have a digital thermometer that I use to check the resin temp. If it is getting above 28 you need to get it out of the cup onto something with a bigger surface (your board)

Hi, Chris Does the heat gun you use have a temperature control on it. Mine only has a two-step switch, hot or bloody hot. Am I correct in saying that you have yours on a warm setting as not to burn your resin. Another great looking piece by the way.

@@crisscross104 Haha too true. I was working on a resin clock on a canvas a while ago, something distracted my attention and I blew a small hole through the damn thing. Not really the look my Daughter was asking for. I did manage to repair with a canvas patch and redo the front with more resin. Nobody would know it was even there, apart from You, me and a couple of thousand tubers now Doh!

Chris what do you use for your white in the resin. I have found that my white goes milky and not at all attractive. Thanks ahead of time.
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 6 жыл бұрын
I use a few but mostly white pigment paste from either Artisue or Arttreecreations. In a mica I tend to use silver pearl, and in the inks the Just Resin Ink.

Thanks so much for the reply. Have you seen or read the site of Jean Tripier at Tripier.com? He has quite a lot on the problems with resin, etc. One of the things he says is that resin shouldn't have any water mixture. But acrylic is water-based, but I've seen artists using it in resin. I'd love to know your thoughts on this. Thanks much --- Barbara
@crisscross104

Using acrylic paint as your pigment is absolutely possible but there are some proviso’s. The paint you can use (even if it is waterbased acrylics) normally has a binder that is water soluable rather than being made with a large amount of water as its base. Try to use a paint that has the most pigment. I found using paint a bit hit and miss. Soft body paints or even craft paints with a high fluid content may split or effect your resin, heavy body quality paints that have a large pigment load are the best. However, You will get the best result if you use pigments designed to be used in epoxy resin.

Thanks again Chris. Very useful info. I should have thought to google acrylic paints for resin. Onward for continual learning with this medium. I would have to choose one that has such a high learning curve :-)

LOL Resin is quite its own beast. But I personally think the trick is to stay small and explore using it with everything you already have. An 8x8 tile will cost cents from the hardware store, and only takes 70-80mls of resin per layer. Its big enough to play with all the effects and small enough that you don’t find it intimidating. Staying small also helps you with control and figuring out the balance in colours and design without a huge outlay. They can be framed using standard photo frames so you feel as though you can finish it and hang it.
