I just received my alcohol ink in the mail, so this was excellent information as usual Steve. It’s like you have a crystal ball on your side of the world and you know just when I need help with something!!!! It’s like you’re the fairy godfather of art and information!!! Very useful and something I wish I'd known a few months ago! I now only use alcohol inks for fluid art things with warnings about using/keeping in the sun as the colours bleach so quickly. I would love you do do some actual tests on these pieces. Put them in direct sun and see how long it takes for the colours (and maybe some clear resin too) to fade or the clear resin to yellow. Many thanks for keeping on point and not whittering like a lot of these tutorials do! x

For most of my projects I use ground heavy pigment chalk pastels but it does give a little 'gritty' look. It's great for casting crystals and Galaxy stuff and never fades but for anything I want to have a nice even color throughout I use resin pigment :)

I was about to buy both translucent and alcohol ink thinking they were different or created diff effects, but they are the same..with the translucent being better. Good to know and saving money, thank you!

I tend to agree with you because I learned early not to use any kind of colouring that isn't specifically made for resin. Having said that there are lots of people out there who are using alcohol inks all the time for the petri dish effect with stunning results but I've made the decision to keep away from that 😊

Hi just wanted to say, my friend bought the same expensive resin pigments from Amazon, I couldn't afford that at the time, so I bought some I think they were by Calfort, I got 24 colours for £19.99. To be honest the only difference was mine were smaller bottles/amounts but I had more colours, I think the overall volume was about the same. So folks always try out the cheaper ones as well, you don't use very much each time, a dip in with a cocktail stick and that was enough to colour a small shot glass! Don't get me wrong the colours of the expensive one were gorgeous and I will get them at some point, but while I'm just playing about with it, I'll stick to the cheap ones. Hugs x Ann x

Good stuff! I know I've had tons of problems with purple alcohol inks completely changing color in horrible ways! I've tried many brands and shades and now I'm only using resin pigment and micas. If you want your creations to last, it's the best way to go. Thanks!

In a 2" thick river table, the pigment I've used has turned very cloudy, they say I used too much. But if I use less I don't get my desired color. How do I achieve a crystal clear transparency? Is it Brand? Ink vs Pigment? Can you explain please? Thank You!!....Patteee!

Is there any advantage to using resin pigment paste versus powdered Mica?

Oh, that's fascinating! As you were demolding them, I was thinking how much more neon the alcohol inks looked... which recalled my experience with dye based watercolors vs pigmented watercolors. The dye based colors tended to be more vibrant, but have lower lightfastness ratings. That is to say, they fade more quickly. I wonder if that's the same mechanism at work here with these inks vs pigments. Thank you for the test!

@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Have you used the epoxy resin dyes? They're more pigmented and thicker than ink and have you found that they faded too? I just bought a box of colors and just want to know how they stand with the Sun test. Thank you.

It looks like the pieces that you used the alcohol inks in have a lot more bubbles. Is alcohol ink known for causing bubbles? Thanks!! ❤

I think you should do it again cause you use solid powder for transparent ink instead of using a liquid vs. Liquid.
