The Miata is a case study in doing things the right way. Never losing sight of the goal, even in an ever-fattening market. Every generation was an improvement over the last, and every generation has it's own distinct character. I have owned thirteen miatas over the last few decades - all generations and in a variety of states (turbo, supercharged, stock, itbs, etc) and enjoyed them as daily drivers, autocross, road course, and even drag cars - and they can do it all well. If you don't need more than two seats, and you don't need to haul your entire house around with you - the Miata is about the perfect automobile. I have been fortunate enough to own / drive a variety of fun cars (I worked in custom/hot-rod/race shops my entire professional life) and not matter what awesome vehicle I spent the day with - I was always thrilled to hop in my Miata. Hagerty has an excellent video on the creation of the Miata, and how it nearly didn't come into fruition. In the list of the greatest cars of all time - the Miata deserves a spot.

I owned and loved a 2000 Miata Special Edition that I modded with racing coilovers, a header and exhaust, an intake, and "larger" 15-inch wheels and 205 rubber. As much as I loved that car, I sold it to buy a 2014 981 Boxster with a PDK. That was an amazing machine, but I missed my old Miata. I test drove a 2019 ND2 and instantly knew the Boxster needed to go. I bought a 2022 ND2 Grand Touring and have been in a state of automotive bliss ever since. Miata Is Always The Answer, especially if you're driving to the dentist for a root canal.

@floodtheinbox, install the Goodwin Racing RoadsterSport Race exhaust and you won’t even miss the Boxster 6 much. That exhaust is maybe $400, is super easy to install and weighs only 12lbs. With it, the little Skyactive makes absolutely glorious sounds!

Mazda and Toyota are the only car companies I believe truly understand what driving is about. I've had my 1.5l 2016 MX5 since 2019, and I'll probably have it for at least another 5 years, if not more.

I've always found the Toyotas I've driven to be utterly boring appliances, certainly not on par with Mazda's driving dynamics.
@creamwobbly
@creamwobbly 28 күн бұрын
This is bull. I drove a couple of Mazda 3s and it was just a road lump like a Civic or a Corolla or (what's the Datsun one?) I've driven a couple of Accords as well and one was a mess, the older 91 (stock, and less than a decade old when I drove it) was an absolute monster. It depends entirely on the model, and the generation, and the target demographic. You really can not generalize.
@ZZZRaven65
@ZZZRaven65 28 күн бұрын
@@creamwobbly Agreed. I like Toyotas... have owned a few... but, for roughly the last 20 years, that company has run by the accountants and it shows. Utterly reliable, but utterly BORING. Appliances. I mean... they basically badge-engineered a freaking BMW to be their flagship sports car in the "Supra" and did the same thing with Subaru for their affordable sports car in the FR-S/86! Shameful! We're finally starting to see some signs of the "old" Toyota building cars for people who have a passion for driving in the new GR Corolla, but that's still built on a very humble economy car platform. The Miata is built on a no-compromise platform that isn't shared with anything else they build - and that has been the case ever since the Miata debuted in 1989. So happy to see Mazda staying true to that original vision all these years later.
@ArunSudama-ur2cd
@ArunSudama-ur2cd 28 күн бұрын
@@ZZZRaven65 I’d agree, while I think Toyota cars and trucks are supremely engineered and built, the majority of their cars have had the appeal of a washing machine. The new models are far better in terms of style and performance. Mazda has generally built cars with a great road presence. This MX-5 is a perfect example of what Mazda has always done.

Mazda and Porsche in my opinion are the two that give a damn about drivers. Both manufacturers encourage their owners to drive the cars on track and neither deny warranty claims automatically for driving their cars too hard.

Spot on assessment of the ND Miata. I have loved Miatas since my wife owned one 20 years ago (NB model). The 'on-paper' acceleration looks lackluster, but by the seat-of-the-pants, it feels remarkable. Every sensation is amplified in this car, and never fails to put a smile on your face. In an era of modern heavy vehicles, Mazda proved them all wrong with a vehicle that weighs the same as the original did 30 years ago. Well done, and thank you Sarah.

It's great how they kept the design philosophy of the original after all this time. I owned a Yellow '92 I bought new when I was in my early twenties. It was my daily driver until 2018 and now my nephew owns it. He's into the 90's Japanese car scene and loves it. I wish they would make it with a beautiful retro 1960's style body.

I know wraps exist, but i would still love to see Mazda work their magic with a green from factory like on the old NB. At meetups its fun to occasionally see the 30th Anniversary orange, but ND's are a sea of red, black, and a blue that's often also black. Paint to sample level is probably unreasonable, but if club models are already build to order it feels like only a benefit to offer (for another cost) a greatly expanded palette

My ND3 GT soft top manual is arriving in 2 weeks. Having owned a ND for a couple years and loved it, I can't wait to experience the updates this refresh brings. Most reviewers seem to agree that the steering feels better, but the new LSD is a bit less tail happy. In any case, no one can deny that the Miata is the most fun you can have behind the wheel, at a price middle class wage earners can actually afford. I've always regretted selling my first Miata, but this one is forever. I will say, as an older driver who enjoys the creature comforts and tech features of modern cars, the GT is the only trim I'd choose for a Miata, especially since it doesn't add much weight or detract from the driving experience in any way.

You'll love it! If it's too small for you, the series before this, the NC which I own, is a little roomier all around and still a blast to drive. They made a huge comeback as a favorite for track drivers racing on weekends! 😎🤘

Remembering when the Miata first came out, it was said to have the DNA of a Lotus. Yep. Always wanted one of these little beasties. Great review! Nice reverence for Iconic cars... leave perfection alone... just keep making 'em!

There are eight cars in my garage. Including a couple Italians and a new C8 Corvette. If it ever comes down from on high that 'Thou shalt have only one fun car', they would all go and I would keep my 10AE NB Miata. There is no better or more fun car to drive. Maybe I will check out an ND but the Sapphire Mica on mine is hard to beat. Loved the review Sarah!

"...to have every single safety feature to take the responsibility of driving out of your hands" => I so much agree with you on this ! I fail to understand why people don't see that. Removing the responsibility of driving also removes the joy of doing it right !

Thank you Sarah for the review. I've driven nothing but Miata since they came out. I presently own a stock NC and still love it!

In 1989 I was deciding between a manual RX-7 convertible and the then first year 1990 Miata. I went with the RX, partly because the dealer markups on the Miatas were out of control and would have cost more than the RX. I still have that RX-7 after 35 years and I love it (and the 8000 RPM redline rotary in the mountains is bliss), but the simple approach of the MX still draws my interest. Glad to see Mazda has stuck with what works.

Has there ever been a score higher than this? Question: Why don't you buy a low milage 2016 Sport and restore and mod it? Fun to restore, fun to paint/wrap, fun to mod, and fun to drive -- esp with the top down!

Just found this channel. Its so entertaining. You are doing videos with knowledge, humor and self distance. Its really Great to see someone loving what they are doing. I dont know what you are on about most of the times but your presentation certainly make it worth watching. Seems like a true petrolhead. Enjoying every car on its own merit and its possibilitys with a very personal view. Thanks Sarah! Keep doing this👍

I've owned 2 Miatas, really need another. They're so much fun and pure. Also, hey Mazda, how about some actual fun colors. We've got red and 50 shades of dental office waiting room. You can do better.

I picked up my ‘24 ND3 a month ago. It’s an RF but otherwise identical to the one you reviewed. Thank you for loving the car. I do, too, and that made my day!

Bought one new in 2017 (1.5L motor, because Europe) and sold it in 2019... Because I had to. But since then, there's not a single day in which I don't wish I could buy another. Before that, I owned all previous iterations, too, but the ND is just perfect. I enjoy all your reviews, but with an MX-5 involved, this was bound to be special. Brilliant car and I'm definitely getting another one soon enough!

With the exception of the Honda 2000, the Miata is still the best small sports car ever made. It is little things like a mechanical hand brake that shows how the designers think about real drivers. Earlier in May, I drove an Audi A3 sedan with stick (given an upgrade from a Fiesta or = class car) in Ireland. for 8 days. At times, on curvy roads and up/down grades it was fun with stick. It wasn't fun when stopped on a grade or in urban/small town traffic, as no hand brake, only the electric one that with stop-start, no 'hill holder' (my automatic CX-30 has one), it was a real PITA to drive at times. I don't normally drive stick and most of my driving stick was in RHD countries and cars with hand brakes.

I'd vote for the Lotus Elise. I did just take delivery of an RF Club, and it's been fun getting used to it. Geared ridiculously low, though.

The little roadster in the 2016 Club soft top form really is a dialed in driving joy ! ABS is the only drivers nanny in my car. At 2340 pounds its light weight makes it nimble in the corners & its still a quick car from a stop. Ordered a 2024 Club soft top in the same spec except the seats will now be Recaros instead of the cloth. It will be bitter sweet to see my ND1 Club go ! The new ND3 Club soft top now weighs around 2365.

The driving impression you gave this vehicle is the same experience I have when I drive my Challenger scat pack widebody with a manual. I have a modified exhaust on it. Most of the time I have the radio turned down or off and just enjoy listening to the sounds and just enjoy the overall experience.
