There should be a correction - Firing Angle is proportional to sin_inverse(R), therefore if R (the variable resistance) increases, firing angle will increase.

if you increase the value of the potentiometer (R) you reduce the current and so it should take longer until the SCR fires, so alpha should increase with increasing R?

As R increases the current reduces and it takes more time to reach the required value of gate voltage that is required to turn in the SCR. The angle at which SCR is turned on is called firing angle (alpha)

Yes bro u are right....by increasing R current decreases so the SCR turn on lately and alpha increases

You are wrong!! If r increases then alpha also increase and vice versa. When r is low then the gate current is sufficiently large to trigger the device instantly, and when R is high then gate current is small and the device will trigger slightly later

Germanium has less power handling capacity compared to silicon. So in most power electronics devices silicon is used

@@arjun4515 lekage current for germanium is more when compared to silicon so we prefer silicon instead of germanium(silicon controlled rectifier instead of germanium controlled rectifier)

that's intuitive, if alpha cannot be more than 90 cuz, if it was then it means it used to get triggered at a particular voltage that comes after 90, but u ll get the same valuee before 90 also

I don't understand the purpose of Rb. It takes away some of the triggering current, and when the thyristor is activated, it is also supplied from the main circuit?

In case of negative half cycle, the SCR will behave as a open circuit.But there is still a path for the current through resistance Rmin branch. So how can the load current be zero?

From scr characteristics if Ig is more Vfb is less and scr will trigger earlier but in this case Resistance is reducing the value of Ig then Vfb should be increased and scr will trigger delay by angle alpha..is it correct??

If R increase then I decreases then forward break over voltage will increase so alpha will decrease

if alpha decreases means we obtain nearly full waveform. it means by increasing R I decrease ,once the scr is triggered how alpha value depends on magnitude of current?.how forward break over voltage increase will result in the decrease of alpha?I am still not clear,I surfed through net I couldnt get the answer.Please explain Sir

If the value (R) INCREASES ...... The GATE CURRENT (Ig) DECREASES............ This results in the INCREASE OF FORWARD BREAKOVER VOLTAGE OF SCR(VfBO INCREASES) SO THIS SHOULD INCREASE THE FIRING ANGLE (ALPHA). Then why it is Decreasing ??

If it is ON, it will short circuit, so voltage will be zero
