*Best Way to ENLARGE your Image:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/apXJe4qnoNGlfbs *How to RESIZE A SELECTION in Photoshop:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZmcnqOwiZ2Dq9E *My SMART OBJECTS tutorial playlist:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3SUl3tqjZpkj7s Hi everyone, Steve here. In this video, I show you how to scale and resize images in Photoshop without losing quality using Smart Objects! You'll learn the difference between resizing a normal pixel image and resizing a Smart Object, and why Smart Objects always look better! To see the advantage of resizing an image as a Smart Object, we start by setting up a side-by-side comparison between a normal, pixel-based image and a Smart Object (0:27). Then we resize both versions of the image, first by scaling them down (3:16) and then scaling them back up (5:14) and we compare the results. We look at why Smart Objects are able to resize images without losing quality (8:45), and we finish off by upscaling both versions of the image back to their original size (9:59). At the end, I share an important tip for making sure you're always getting the best results (11:52). To learn more about Smart Objects in Photoshop, check out other videos in this series (goo.gl/rDYYws). What a great pleasure to watch this wonderful tutorial...talking at a good speed so people could watch and listen to the various steps...and best of all, not rushing past important steps assuming people would just "understand"...I loved it. And for those who think it took too long to watch, stop complaining and just increase the playback speed. Thank, Steve.

I apologize but, shouldn't this video be called something like "How resizing works using smart objects?" I entered thinking I would see how making a small image a smart object will make it look better if I resize it up, or at least is what I understood from the title. But, I don't see the point of resizing an image down and then up to show quality is not lost if converted to a smart object (useful if...) unless that's the point of the video, which apparently is, that's why i think the title, is misleading, not saying it's on purpose really, just explaining my case. Thanks.

Hi Gerardo, thanks for your comments! I apologize for any confusion. One of the main benefits of smart objects is that they can be resized over and over again without any loss in quality, making them perfect for designing layouts, compositing images, creating effects, or any situation where you're not sure what the final size of your image will need to be. Unfortunately, as you mentioned and as I point out in the video, smart objects lose their advantage if you enlarge them beyond the original size of the image. If you're looking to enlarge an image and you're using Photoshop CC, I have a separate video that covers the new upscaling abilities in Photoshop CC 2018: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apXJe4qnoNGlfbs . Sorry again for any confusion.

Thank you for the information, however you did not explain how to resize an image without losing quality. (You explained how making a layer a "smart object" will maintain its data) This does not help me to decrease a size of an image and maintain the quality.

You are correct ItsMeMikeyMan, but think you meant to say that it does not help you increase the size of an image. This technique protects the image data, but I can't think of a scenario where I would shrink an image, just to scale it back up again. Title of the video is misleading.

I have to agree with those who think your title is misleading. A student of mine sent me this link because they thought it would let you scale an object beyond its original resolution and still be a high quality image. I doubt that many professional designers would be resizing images multiple times within Photoshop; that’s what page layout programs are for.
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel 5 жыл бұрын
But that is one of the main benefits of using smart objects, that you can scale them multiple times within Photoshop without losing quality. Smart objects are a much more flexible way to work, as opposed to resizing pixel-based layers and making permanent changes. The title is not meant to be misleading. Smart objects let you scale images non-destructively, and that's what I show in the video. As someone who does a lot of image compositing, I always convert my layers to smart objects so I can freely experiment with the sizes of different elements in the composition. It's the same reason I use layer masks instead of the Eraser Tool. Anything that keeps my work flexible is a welcome feature, and smart objects are definitely one of those features.

Hey, I have a tricky question... it is about resizing smart objects. Can you select multiple smart objects and resize them to a specific number of pixels? This is something I don't find an easy solution, as my goal is simple, I want to resize all the images in my collage to an exact size number. For now, I have to do it inexactly and one by one.

Resizing incorrectly is a pain many of us have been through, especially when you have to do it several times. I like the tutorial, but it takes a long time to get to what it's teaching, so humbly, I offer some constructive criticism: I think you only need to show what happens when you upscale once, so beginners understand that if they made something too small that upscaling is not going to work-- they would normally have to go back to the original image and resize down again. Then explain the smart objects' advantage of being able to resize (as you did) is because it uses original data, thus avoiding having to keep a copy of the original data in another layer, or having to reload from disk.
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments! The reason I didn't just scale the images down and then back up again was because I wanted to emphasis the point that the more you resize a normal layer, the worse the image looks, while the smart object can be resized over and over again without any loss in quality. I know I could have made the lesson shorter, but I didn't think it would be as effective.

Title should be 'How to Free-Transform an Image Non-destructively.' Using free transform to resize the image does not change the canvas and image size. If you were to change the size use Image Size dialogue box to make informed decisions on up-scaling or down-scaling an image without destroying the quality.
