OMG Thank you!!! I was told to pull back the corners of my mouth, akin to sucking on a piece of candy or a straw. It wasn't working, and I was having a terrible time with it, but when you said French, it clicked. It has made a world of difference :) For once, I don't hate my voice!

Measuring pitch? A smartphone can probably do that using the microphone. You'd have to get an app for it or something.

As a linguist, I'd have to say that this is not the best instruction at all. TransVoiceLessons is literal decades of learning ahead of this. For SLPs and other phoneticians: The 1-step exercise to increase "R1" (what TVL terms the resonance of the laryngeal/pharyngeal space), is to articulate bare aspiration, and raise the pitch of that aspiration (do not palatalize!). Once you have gotten this very high, hold it there and start speaking. You'll be able to hold a modal voice with a much-smaller R1 space. To reduce how much of the vocal folds are vibrating (what TVL terms "thinness" or "thickness"), just tilt your neck all the way up / tilt your head all the way back while you're speaking, and maintain the sound it gives you. This is a distillation of an hour of introductory TVL videos. I definitely recommend watching them for yourself. A typical female SLP will always have difficulty demonstrating the full potential of this effect, however, since women do not as a rule get large R1 spaces in puberty.

Hi Rylie, that is an impressive page! I love how it is so in-depth. This is going to help a lot of people. I’m sure you can understand that my videos are glimpses into what it is that we do. As you are aware, there are many complexities to changing the voice and each individual is different. Using evidence based practice as a foundation, I tailor each POC to the person and make decisions based on that person and their needs/anatomy. That is why my videos are not in-depth, they are never meant to treat anyone, but act as a guide and let people know that they can get assistance. Thanks for your input.

I am so sick of cisgender speech therapists like you who don't know the first thing about voice feminization telling us trans women how to use bullshit classical singing techniques to make subtle changes like the ones demonstrated here. Viewers -- Notice how all of the different voices she uses in this video all sound cis female. That's because she is a cis female, and she isn't doing much of anything to change the size of her resonating cavities. If she wanted to sound less female in any truly noticeable way, she'd have to lower her larynx as well as use a heavier amount of vocal weight. The real trick to voice feminization is in shrinking the space inside and thus raising the main resonant frequency (or R1) of our voice, which is largely done through the raising of the larynx. Some stuff with the mouth space is involved too, yes, but without any larynx manipulation, you're just going to be making tiny subtle changes like the ones heard in this video, and not really changing your vocal gender much at all. Speech language pathologists like this hack will usually not tell you to raise your larynx though, because there is a phobia in the classical singing community of raising the larynx. It can be associated with increased tension and strain (keyword: can), so they largely avoid it, clinging to this delusion that larynx manipulation and tension cannot ever be decoupled. Check out transvoicelessons though. She's a much better voice teacher than I am. Focusing too much on thinking of it as "larynx raising" like I'm saying here can indeed sometimes lead to tension, and she's been modifying her teaching style to be more effective in all sorts of ways since I did the bulk of my initial study into this. Don't trust cis SLPs. 90% of them have no idea what they're doing.
