I just put a Remo SilentStroke 22" head on my kick drum. I also left the front(resonant)head on my kick drum. I put some very soft pillows in my kick drum to help keep the sound down, I use a Roland RT-30 kick drum trigger connected to an Alesis D4 module. I can barely hear my kick drum!! What I do hear is the Alesis D4 kick drum sound. I wanted to get my kick drum to be as quiet as my Roland KD-9 kick drum pad. It is MORE than quiet!! I'm very happy with the results!!!!

You have to find a way to create a "bottom head" simulation closer to the batter head. As close as possible in order to greatly effect the overall volume. To sound proof a room you create a room inside of a room. You need to do the same inside the acoustic drum. Trap the air as close to the batter head as possible and it will sound very close to the level of playing a regular mesh pad that's only a couple inches deep. Yes it's a DIY but that's how you can cut the volume in half. Also if anyone trys this, make sure you get as close to a complete seal of the internal piece you install. Like if it's a 13" wood circle cutout and you bolt it inside of a 14" tom at the top lugs try to tape or glue a small towel or something that goes around the edges to create as good an air seal as possible.

SiREN-DRUMS I just came across this old comment of yours and it sounds like a great idea. Have you tried this yourself or are you aware of any youtube video or documented DIY project like this by any chance? I'm looking for a way to reduce my acoustic kit's volume without killing its tone and all the solutions currently available on the market seem sub-par and/or way overpriced. It'd be really interesting to see how well this would work.

Hey Justin. If you put enough towels in the drum to completely fill the drum and not just one small towel it will be much quieter. Something that I recently did was to fill all of my drums with Batting Material that you use to make pillows. It is very cheap and works very very well. You should try this!

My kit is in my living room. It's way better than when I play my acoustic kit in the unfinished basement. Believe it or not rearranging the furniture made it much quieter. At first I had it facing out next to a little table. Now it's facing the wall tucked in between a couch and chair. It kinda makes a mini soft surface box I'm in. Made a big difference. My 3 year old can sleep on the couch behind me unless I'm playing like lamb of God style straight double bass

I tried using spongy material between two mesh heads. In terms of noise levels it didn't change much. But it made the sound a little less intrusive. I also tried a minimalist version of a drum, purely for research reasons: A 10" plastic ring, just tall enough to accommodate a mesh head and a rim, screwed to a wooden board -> almost no depth. The noise maker clearly is the mesh head itself, specifically the ringing. I use Pintech pads with Silent Strokes. What they do, they glue the foam cone (with Pintech it's actually a cylinder) to the mesh head which effectively dampens the ringing. The result is a short and dull *pluck* sound. Very, very quiet. Unfortunately, those foam cylinders look pretty DIY'ish, and they bend and disintegrate over time. But in terms of noise levels they are the best solution.

Great video series. I've learned quite a bit from you. Will you be making a review on the Laurin snare? Also if you could do a video on neatening up the wires on a set, I would appreciate it.
@crimsun71866 жыл бұрын
There's no loudness difference ( it might be as little as 3dB, which the vast majority of people can't even notice) because the drum head that produces sound doesn't move enough air to vibrate the resonant head. The blanket changes the sound because you closed the air path the head had before. You can notice that same low thud on Roland pads, which have most of their under part closed off.
@SliderVP26 жыл бұрын
There is one more thing to do: you should tune the resonant head to anti phase with top head. It will reduce the sustain. I have found that using a blanket is louder than just leave it empty.

I just saw this but I do have one quick question for many of us LATAM edrummers that are not as rich or with as many resources as European or Northamerican ones. If I have the shell pack and the triggers, could I make the internal triggering work with let's say, adjusting the settings inside my Roland Module? I have a TD-07 BTW. Thanks in advance!
@adamoutlnd76094 жыл бұрын
Random question. If you were to use a normal acoustic head, would a mesh resonant head work as a half way point between a normal resonant head and no resonant head, or would it just sound odd?
@RainMakeR_Workshop8 ай бұрын
Bugger, not quite what I'm looking for. Trying to see if anyone has paired mesh heads with standards heads to have a loud rehearsal/gigging kit and a quiet practice kit in one without having those drum mute pads.

great tests, Justin; I noticed that the tone got lower with each added mesh head/blanket

I think the impact noise could not be quieter. I've tried blankets or pillows in the bass drum. The high resonance is killed but you have the impact noise. maybe between the bearing edge and the head should be something but i dont know what. Greetings

can I use both the mesh head and a thin piece metal click pad by gibltar on the kick drum?

Also use different thickness sizes of Pro Mark, Hot Rod Drum Sticks or any other brand!

Thanks for this great video! Could you do one on the same topic but with Bassdrums? I'm currently experimenting on how to reduce the bass drum sound (2ply mesh on 18“) and it seems as though putting a blanket in there didn't help very much but rather increased the volume.

what about nylon tip vs wood, interested in that outcome too
@gonecrazynback6 жыл бұрын
I was told wood can tear mesh heads.
@Aussie_Badger6 жыл бұрын
As long as the wood tip isn’t chipped then they are ok. But you’re right, nylon tip is safer with mesh heads. I’ve used wood for 6 months with no issues but will prob buy nylon tip next time.

So sorry Justin, you're the man and I love your videos but my inner grammar nazi.....it's.....it's too......powerful........the caption you put up that says "hitting a metal rim effects the volume drastically" it should be 'affect', not 'effect'. Affect is the verb, effect is the noun.
@nedtheyak6 жыл бұрын
Additionally, I believe that 2:48 should say "of" (as opposed to "off"). The capitalization is also off, but I'm not too worried about that lol
