Fun fact: in Ancient Rome, the Triarii were rarely used due to how effective the Romans tactics were in combat against their less organized neighbors. From personal testing, the best in-game formation uses are: Shieldwall when you have 50/50 numbers and mostly infantry. Circle when using a blend of range/melee and at a numerical disadvantage. Square is basically Testudo formation if you have a heavy infantry/shield army and are heavily outnumbered, it prevents you from being flanked and resists charges very well. Chevron is an arrow pointed formation for Cav charges and (with enough horses) will easily plow through an enemy formation if you want to hammer&anvil. Finally the Loose formation is basically your MUST use for your ranged units if you are going to exchange fire with enemies, as Vanilla arrows/bolts ignore most armour ratings and tend to outright kill even high tier units with only 1-3 hits depending on the location of a hit (rebalanced/fixed with mods), so keeping your unshielded ranged units dispersed will help prevent them from being killed by stray arrows missing the guys next to them.

Bannerlord's shield walls actually work really well if you use collision rebalanced or combat improvements mod. It makes the collision hitbox for each NPC bigger so that they can't clip into each other, and if you make a really wide, 2 man deep shield wall with archers behind, they'll actually fire upwards to hit the enemies in front of the shield wall and it works really well.

I'm doing a Rogue campaign, testing myself by only being able to recruit non faction units. From, yes when you take them in battle. I use my prisoner rosta as my reserve army, ready to fill the boots of the fallen. I do have 12 Sea Bandit leaders in a specific formation, which is cool.

Once you get the disciplinarian perk in the leadership upgrade column, you can upgrade all non/small faction troops past tier 3

Hobby game dev here. Here is a nice bit of trivia for you. The reason the head disappears in first person is so it doesn't intersect with the camera view. However as you can see,Taleworlds are having a bug occur when you enter battles in first person, and you can see the "inside" of the head model as of writing this.

Did you know you can make your formation wider or deeper by using left mouse button? Just click on one place and drag it to the next place that you want your formation to be in between. By this way you can prevent flanking when you are outnumbered.

when you're outnumbered, or facing a lot of cav, using Circle Formation is useful because it prevents them from getting into your back, but the far side can be vulnerable to missile fire and it is a much slower formation

Hey Res The lorica segmentata was very late empire, only a few decades or so before the split. As such, that armor would be more suited to the empire era troops of the main factions, like legionarys. In the older days of the senate most of the troops would have worn chain mail, known as lorica hamata.
@Comintern19194 жыл бұрын
No, it was very much NOT a Very Late Empire Armor, what are you talking about? It was used in the Early and Middle Empire, from around 27 BC to maybe 200 AD, but certainly not by the Late Empire, where the Empire couldn't afford such Heavy Armor anymore. It may still have been used sporadically in the Late Empire, but not on a large scale anymore. And either way throughout the entire Roman History the Lorica Hamata was still kept as an alternative. If you are interested, I can recommend you the awesome book "Uniforms of the Roman World".

Would've liked to see an attempt at a Triplex axis move. Hastatii shield wall with Principe as a ranged troop and the triarii as a cavalry. Wait until the enemy engage in melee with the Hastatii, then retreat them and advance the Principe. Use the triarii use keep Cav from charging into your line.

Cool video. Im gonna be annoying though...it was actually in the Roman Republic (not the empire) that the Histati, Princepes, triarii organization method was used. It was disbanded in the Marion reforms around 100 AD I think....but it doesn't really matter just a fun fact
@CountArtha4 жыл бұрын
Someone should probably mention: The Roman Empire never used the pre-Marian system. The Marian Reforms happened in 107 BC, about 70 years before the end of the Republic.

The game occurred at the end of the Roman Empire so Cataphacts are accurate for romans Legions are accurate for romans Equites are accurate for romans Bucelarii are accurate for romans Palatine Guard or Scholae Palatinae are accurate for romans

@dianahaigwood33373 жыл бұрын
Sorry for this correction But the soldiers Hastati, Principes, and Triarii were Roman Monarchy - Marius's Consulship as the Legionary was formed when Consul Marius decreed the absolving of the Militia and formed a Standing Army that was then known as the Legions.
@GruesomePizza19926 ай бұрын
That clash where you had 77 hastati, you could have possibly lasted longer if you had them move from loose to shield wall to have as many outgoing javelins. Unless your under accurate archer fire keep them loose.
@lovetsky4 жыл бұрын
Use square formation when attacked by cavalry. Maybe even use circle formation when outnumbered (so you don't get flanked). In general, when outnumbered, it's a good practice to use formations and terrain for your advantage.

You need calvary as the hammer on both sides to assist the shield wall as the anvil.

The Equites were still a part of the roman army and auxillary troops from different cultures as well. Would have loved to have seen them too, great video though.
@calebchristensen9004 жыл бұрын
If you are to copy the Legions, you'd have to hire cohorts of Archers and Calvary in order to help where the Legionnaires fall short. Which is Calvary fighting and ranged fighting, as well as shock troops.

It'd be interesting to see a battle with the Legion's units set up as the Republican Legions actually used these troops, i.e. three battle lines with hastati at the front, principes second and the triarii following. It'd be even cooler if it was in the same ratio of 2:2:1. #justnerdythings
@comradeotaku4 жыл бұрын
Also I would love to see the Velites. Otherwise the Legion is really lacking in any sort of dedicated ranged troops. Oh and Equites, for the cav.

@@NotFinnish Romans didn't really use their own citizenry for archery. They usually used auxiliaries from their Latin allies. And later the provinces as they grew larger. But auxiliaries weren't part of a "Legion". Legions took the centre of an army, while auxiliaries stood on either side of the Legions while the cav was on the flanks.
