Resourceful Rat Punch-Out Without Blocking, Ducking, or Dodging

If I had a nickel for every time a rat faked its death only to come back in a mech in a three phase boss fight in a game with optional co-op about trying to undo something you regret, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

Hey, I'm REALLY struggling on the punch out phase, what is your trick? how do you get such good punches

The only things besides just learning his moves, are to alternate, so you're switching hands with every punch, you get twice as many punches each time this way, and never use dodges, there is not a single move in the fight that can't be evaded better with blocks or ducks
