It wasn't really true blackface though. It just looked like they had been working in a coal mine. Which was probably a good thing that they didn't really know what wearing blackface was. Which is apparently to put solid black paint on your face, and have white paint lips.

Heki Kahni doesnt matter tho, black face got popular due to enhanced expressions in entertainment which was mostly on black and white screens. Black next to white is like having red next to blue. You can see every motion. They either avoided painting their lips and eyebrows with a dark or black paint and later added a lighter color for their lips and eyebrows for previous reasons.
