I like to think that trust is respect. Cuz I am the exact same. I will be as nice as can be when I meet you and interact with you, and I will make sure you enjoy my company. But the moment you start getting disrespectful and trying to tear me down or just ruin my day with a bad attitude, then you don't get any respect back. And you definitely don't have my trust.

I think of respect as a score between 1 and 10. I give most strangers a default score of 3. They earn extra points if they prove themselves civil and honorable. They lose points if they are rude or foolish. A score of zero is fight-or-flight mode. Scores above 6 are reserved for long-time friends and family members. A score of 10 is reserved for role-models and heroes.

Your comments about the phone as an impediment to communication is correct. As someone that works with young people I can say that the new generation hate to talk on their phones. They are always on their phones, but never talk on them. Sometimes when I'm talking with them about their projects, I'll suggest that they call their teammates to discuss their work, and they almost cringe. It's very funny how this works. Thank You Bjorn! Respect is lacking these days because people don't respect themselves. If you don't respect yourself you can't respect others. You see trash and litter everywhere. That's disrespect big time. I remember as I was growing up in the 50-60s in a small town, it seemed everyone had respect for one another, helpful and truly concerned about how you were doing. As kids we shoveled snow for the elderly and didn't expect pay. But they often paid you a little in gratitude and respected you for your help without being asked. People have grown so mistrusting in modern times but again, respect themselves very little or not at all. Every step we take should be with respect for all Creation. And as you live your life and spend much time in the natural places, you live respect by your actions. You walk your talk. You are a good example for everyone. Respect create happiness. Goods travels and all the beauty nature holds! DaveyJO in Pa.

My grandfather has been shot at 3 times in his life. Once from a machine gunner in the city (his work van was misidentified as a rival gang member’s). Twice in the forest. The last time the hunter tried to get the hounds after him thinking he was a deer. When he came back he was completely calm and brought it up laughing, he may have been terrified on the inside but that is one of the many reasons I respect him. Because he was so calm and never showed a sign of panic. I can’t verify the 1st forest time as I wasn’t alive, but for the machine gunner he still has the police report and pictures of his riddled van, for the 3rd time I heard the shot and I knew he was walking in an area known for hunting. I have never known him to lie which evidently is another reason I respect him.

I agree wholeheartedly with your observations... this was a common debate between my Opa and I while he was still alive... I love and miss him, and have total respect for the man... however, he grew up an old school German and fear, to him, often equated to respect... my position was always that you may be shown what you think is respect, but really it's just someone submitting to you, not actually holding you in high esteem... I dont really know if he understood my position or if he was just testing me, and teaching me... he was a great debater and actually a very thoughtful man (for an old square-head)... I think we both loved those interactions, as heated as they could get... God I miss that man... anyway, Bjorn, thank you for another great video discussion

There are too many people that are self absorbed, with a sense of entitlement, that think they should have respect without having earned it. There are too many examples to mention, but, respect and integrity is not a given, it has to be earned. Keep posting your videos, as they are refreshing, but very informative! Skål !!

Absolutely correct. The latest move to respect everyone undermines the development of personal responsibility and moral, ethical behaviour because people expect acknowledgment without earning it. As far as tolerance is concerned, I do not totally agree-we should not tolerate those who seem to be deliberately undermining the very fabric of society. They should be treated with contempt because they are intentionally destroying decent society and the structure of the family and men’s roles in it.
@MalXcontent5 жыл бұрын
Respect is something I feel is very important. I think that it is confused with other aspects of social behaviour. Being polite and civil is linked to respect. However you can not respect someone but at the same time be polite and civil to them. So when people say that everyone should be respected, what they really mean is that people should be treated politely and with civility. Respect is earned and earned by integrity in a person’s intentions. Yet then again, sometimes this isn’t enough. Some people are incapable of being respectful. Cool stove btw.

Absolutely right on the twisting of the word respect. With arrogance, resentment, and deceit they attempt to bully and if you cave to the start of their dominant master role then you are respectful other wise they will do their best to ruin you without physically touching you. I enjoy these videos as I've entered a stage in life where I am starting to struggle with a lot of conversations that I have with people. At times I find it hard to deal with what I hear from friends and some family. Everybody is slowly becoming soft and unwilling to express true opinions. A close friend of mine started to work in the movie/TV industry in his thirties. He'd never been afraid to speak his mind and be straight forward. Now after a few years in the industry he gets defensive every time I even ask questions about things like gender fluidity, inclusivity. Recently I wanted to talk to him about Greta Thunberg as I've been a bit dubious as to how quickly she's gained international fame and wondered if there are other factors at play in the background. Just me asking questions prompted him to say to me 'it's ridiculous to attack her...for god sake she's doing something important...she has a right to be angry...' etc. Questions are attacks now. I can't even get into the mind of people now who think that everyone should be included in everything and be made to feel good about themselves at all times, never questioned or criticised otherwise you're sexist/racist etc. I've just become a father and luckily I have moved out of Europe to Indonesia. My wife wants to go and live in the UK but I'm honestly worried about him growing up in that environment. He'll be seen as a villain if he doesn't conform exactly to the latest movement. I want my son to grow up to be a man, a real man who has integrity and will stand up for himself no matter what. In the UK he'll probably have that drained out of him year after year.

I think there are two types of respect. Respect for humanity, the fact that someone is a person with their own opinions, they may be different to you or they may be similar, there is basic respect that someone can be different and still human. I think that is very close to tolerance although I think tolerance doesn’t have quite the right connotation and there is probably a better word for it out there. And then there is the respect for a person, this is earned. To gain the first type of respect all you have to be is human. To lose it you would have to do something very dehumanising and truly horrible. Whereas the second type is for the values that someone holds, something they've accomplished, etc. This is the kind of respect I have for this man, the same respect I have for my mother, my father, a few of my teachers, etc. This is the respect that means that I will make sure to listen to something that they have to say, I will value their leadership and guidance and I will treat them with respect. There are many people out there that I do not respect. They have not earned it so there is no expectation for respect or any special treatment beyond courtesy and observing their basic human rights.

Respect goes without saying, but honor is only due those who show they can handle it and they have done the actions required to garner it. You sir, are an honorable man. I can respect someone without honor. I cannot honor someone without respect. Great content. Keep up the good work. Stay vigilant. בס"ד

Takk Bjørn🙏 - I'm taking my kids out for a walk in the woods now. They must also learn respect for the forest and nature itself.

I somewhat agree however I would say the confusion at the moment is between having respect for someone and being respectful to them.

Right. Having respect for someone(generally) and showing it(for a specific action) are two different things. It's a shame that Bjorn could not provide any examples of this in 11 minutes.

Respect at a higher level should always be earned, however I do feel that we need to have a basic level of respect for strangers we don't know, to be a nice person to someone we don't know, Yes sir, thank you sir, thank you mam, please and thank you...some common courtesy and manners...until the point that person is rude and doesn't merit our respect and still be respectful enough not to be rude as well and just go on our way.

Sometimes when people say they want respect, they really mean they want admiration.

I enjoy your videos very much. You have a healthy calmness about you. I am not Japanese but am currently living in Japan, a country that is very respect-conscious. As a foreigner here, I can ask a lot of questions and ponder the answers. One person explained the very basic structure of respect here: You recognize that the other person is not an extension of yourself - each person has a degree of separation and are working on their own life, you do not own them or even know all there is to know about them, so you treat them gently and do not invade their space / environment / mind / life... This is the most primitive, basic level of respect. Perhaps you are thinking of the respect that comes from being in a hierarchy, with one person above the other person in some aspect or another that creates admiration. That is the kind of respect that must be earned. But this level comes after recognizing the other person is a separate person who you may not know everything about, and you need to give them space and dignity.

I mostly grew up in the streets, there you learn, very quickly the difference between - accept - respect and fear..... most people could benefit from being forced to live for a while in such an enviroment, it makes you humble in some ways

I’m glad you mentioned about the granite industry because I was wondering how you found such a level rock surface.
