I completely agree. To value yourself mostly as a wife or mother rather than a person sounds like a kind of objectification to me. Small kids see their parents mostly as an extention of themselves and not as individuals with their own lives, but then we grow up and we start seing them as independant, real people just like ourselves. I can't imagine being grown up and thinking of yourself as an extention of other people first and foremost. I think conservative women would get a lot from reading The Feminine Mystique, it's old but it can still be liberating for someone who is stuck in that mindset.

@@maschaorsomething "Shapes are already enough to turn someone on, they don't have respect for you." That really sounds like a non-sequitur. I mean, I'm probably interpreting a bit too much into this sentence, but I'd be much more comfortable if there was a period separating these two statements, as one does not imply the other. Getting turned on by someone has absolutely *nothing* to do with whether you respect that person or not. By that logic, intimate relationships could not exist, as two people finding each other attractive cannot respect each other...

@@MissBloopTartVT while I fully agree that dressing "modestly" will ultimately not prevent sexualization... I do think it's a bit ridiculous to try to separate dress from sexuality as much as I feel you try to. Yes, men will sexualize women regardless of how they dress - that doesn't change that certain types of dress tend to correlate with more sexualization. And no, I'm not trying to justify anything on the behalf of an assaulter... Violence is violence and, obviously, the perpetrator is the one who chose to make the violent act and should be treated as such under the court of law and public opinion. I hate that we have such a toxic political environment where people could (understandably) think my comment is an attempted victim-blame, but a bunch of idiots have co-opted and hijacked the basic point that different forms of dress can concievably be more sexualized than others.

And the speaker asks the audience questions like, "don't you want to be rich? Don't you want a hot wife or husband? Don't you want to be happy for once in your miserable life?" And of course everyone thinks, "yes" to some capacity... And then they hit you with the big lie now that you're all buttered up because you're thinking about how this person is about to to explain a sure fire way to acquire those things in your life. But, all they really do is trick you into buying into the starter package for the pyramid scheme and a week or 2 later you realize this is bullshit, I'm never going to get those things by doing this. And you blame yourself and blame the economy and the system and more. But, really you're just holding on to this lie of a perfect life that was sold to you, in a way, by yourself. All that to say, Abby Shapiro is like that. You can be whoever you want to be as long as it's like what I am describing. I think there’s difference between seeking “like-mindedness” and absolute conformity. From what I gather, “leftists” seem to seek acceptance for a variety of human expression and ask for tolerance of diversity, while the “right” tends to idealize only specific, yet nebulous, forms of expression. The next argument is “well the left doesn’t tolerate the ideas of the right,” and I would say that tolerance of intolerance is just intolerance.

As a cis hetero male, I weirdly find it a bit insulting that someone would think "modestly dressed" women are somehow less targeted. Like, I think as myself as a fairly switched on feminist guy, but in the moments in my life where I slip and find myself ogling women in the street it's generally nothing to do with how they're dressed, but more their shape or their face or their general demeanour. I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm 30 and have a more chilled approach to the opposite sex, but the very idea that "modesty" somehow tricks the male psyche is kind of insulting.

And when you add fetishes in to the mix, something as simple as walking barefoot, a fairly innocuous thing, can end up you having to play a role in a Tarantino film, and not one of the good ones. There’s nothing wrong with having that fetish (even if I don’t get it), but it’s the removal of body parts from the person they’re attached to (figuratively, but literally would also be a problem) that goes over the line of acceptability. Being physically attracted to a person is not even really a choice, so it’s always okay, but everything after that is a choice, and no amount of biology excuses objectification or assault etc. They made the choice to value their own feelings more than the target of their abuse.

Every time victim blamers pin it on clothes, I'm reminded of the exhibition "What Were You Wearing?", where they showed the clothes rape victims were wearing when they were assaulted. Most of the outfits are not even close to what could be considered sexy attire... and among the motley clothes, there is a child’s school uniform. Blaming the victim for choosing "the wrong cloths" is fucking disgusting. I don't care if they were wearing nothing but a thong or if they were wearing overalls, it doesn't make them responsible for a rapist's choice.

Before I watch the video, here’s my theory: Abby, like Ben, is a savvy marketer, and she not only knows fully well that online weirdos are attracted to her, but is capitalizing on the coomer market to either spread her videos or push said coomers to fall down the “modest” rabbit hole themselves. This doesn’t seem revelatory or groundbreaking in the slightest, but I still feel mildly smart for figuring it out, and at least I can act like I was the first to come up with it if I’m early enough to this comment section lmao

I love how they try to use the “family values” and “think of the children!!” and “traditional lifestyle” arguments when me and my boyfriend (both cis but not straight, btw) plan to foster and adopt kids while we run a hobby farm and keep bees and preserve our own food and he is a stay at home parent and writer, and I’m a lawyer/breadwinner. That is by all definitions a traditional household. There is a parent at home to be there for the children. There is a parent going out in the world to make money. We are learning traditional things like canning, agriculture, sewing, and woodworking. But those are fucking dog whistles, as we know. @@athenajaxon2397 Actually, the exact opposite is true. There's a reason why when a man touches a woman inappropriately, it's considered as sexual harassment, whereas if a woman touches a man inappropriately, it's considered "being spicey". There's a reason why the ®@pe of women is taken very seriously, while the ®@pe of men is often joked about in the media.
