I bought a 149g gstar Katana awhile back and it immediately was easy max distance for me. However as my form improved I was able to throw more stable discs further. Now days the Destroyer is my go to distance driver. However i bag them in different weights depending on how stable of a throw I need. The one thing I've noticed about light weight discs is they seem to get up to speed quick and look like they're going to go a mile, but then as they slow down towards the end of their flight they just sort of die. While a max weight disc seems to get better forward ground play at the end.

Your so right about the weight and speeds that normal humans need. I started playing again after 2 decades off and bought a couple max weight 12 & 13 speeds, and also moved from almost sea level, that was a huge mistake. The first driver that I could make work was a 158g Diamond and it was game changing to throw a disc that my arm could handle. I've got to where I can get a proper flight from less flippy drivers but stay around the 165g range and still haven't got consistent results with anything over a 10 speed. This disc looks like one I may need to try. Also we need all the "normal" player videos we can get, cause it does no good to see how a disc fly's for a pro unless you have the arm for it.

I’m 54, have only been playing 3 years, but my 150g GStar Mamba has been my main driver for awhile now. It’s ironically more stable than a few of my other heavier Star Mambas. It’s the lightest one I carry, most all other are close to max weight or upper 160’s in weight. Good review, keep it up 👍

Great point about weight affecting release! Yes! I am blown away by the response to this video. I will definitely do more content that is relatable. There is actually a shop here in Calgary called Lifesport, that makes a point of carrying light discs for newer players. We are planning to drop that video soon! Thanks for taking the time to write such a well-thought response! Excited to see our little community growing!

I can't get over 300ft and enjoy seeing content from people who have a bit more average of a skill level and that's no disrespect at all. Someone who can crush 400+ ft throwing a disc doesn't help me much if that's not the flight at all I'm going to get because of form issues or still learning. Awesome content, just subscribed.

For most Average, MA3 level players, 11 speed discs are too fast and we can't get them up to speed to fly as they were engineered to. This pretty much means it will be more stable than the flight numbers suggest with more pronounced fade at the end. However, a lighter, (I throw 148 - 150 gram Gstar Mambas) will fly more understable and will be pretty neutral (ergo, straight) with easier flex/S-turn and easier hyzer flip up to flat. I throw a 150 gram MVP Fission Wave and a 145 gram Fission Insanity too. The Wave is similar to the Mamba where the Insanity is similar to the Valkyrie. I enjoy a much more reliable flight with these than any heavier weight discs. I do have a 155 and a 170 gram Mamba I use for headwind throws. The 148/150 will drift far to the right on a RHBH headwind throw but almost always fades back at the end. I just aim really left of the target to try to land in the direction of the target :)

As air density decreases (as one goes up in elevation) lift will be reduced. It makes sense to decrease weight. 5000' is about 80% as dense so dropping disc weight is logical so a 170g disc at sea level is equivalent to a 135g disc at 5000'. A warm humid day compared to a cold dry day is about a 5% weight change.

Weight is hardly talked about in my experience and I never even knew about different weights when I started 2 years ago. People recommended discs and I bought them. I still have a couple of max weight discs from when I started, but they rarely come of my bag because I don't have the arm speed for them. By chance I picked up a Valkyrie and couldn't figure out why I threw it so much further and its slight path looked more like what I watched on videos. Turned out it was 156g. 90% of my discs are now under 168g and I am enjoying the game so much more., despite being labeled a girly disc thrower.

I own the fact that I don't throw far! Also, I know some girls that absolutely RIP so I don't think that statement would mean much here in Calgary. I've got a video upcoming where I do a mic'd up round with Jo Henderson and while she doesn't have a cannon for an arm, she probably throws as far *likely farther than me and I'm good with that! I know I don't have a huge arm, so I've been really working on other parts of my game. Approach/putting/smart game play is where you can make up so many strokes on your competition!

From my 140g Destroyer to my new 156g Pure, light discs have been game changers. I did it in tennis when I stopped copying pros with heavy stiff racquets and in golf with a too stiff shaft. I am not a pro, don’t have the speed or strength so why not make it as easy as possible! Thanks for the content… with everything about longest drive (like the other golf) finesse and easy of play for us mere mortals is easily forgotten

I'm a rec-level player and I did a video where I threw my favorite driver off every tee and for some upshots - a well-used Innova Leopard - and was told by someone I didn't do the disc justice because of inconsistent flights caused by the disc or the way I threw it. He didn't think watching a newer player throwing a very beat in disc proved the disc is great. That's not really the point. The vast majority of disc golfers are in the novice-rec range and it's a lot more instructive to see how discs fly for most people, and in that video I spent a lot of time a) talking about the disc (history, use cases), and b) demonstrating the most common shots in the hands of someone my level, and c) relating my experiences with the disc. Side note: I bag a 170g GStar Mamba, and I have a friend who bags 1 in the 150-160 range (he's lost a couple but he just replaces them with another one) and for us we get max distance with them because of the profile. It's a law of diminishing returns over something like a 6-7 speed disc, but the aerodynamics do help if you get the disc at the right angle, and you put enough speed on them. Also the skip factor is useful in some situations.

I like lightweight discs. I throw like 80-90 meters on good weather conditions on flat ground. (280-300 feet) But my form is not perfect every day. 😂 You should try L64 Diamond on like 155 grams. I have both Opto & Gold plastic. Gold is a bit more stable then the Opto plastic. Great discs for a bit lower armspeed. If you can you should try it out. I have a Mamba but not lightwieght. Works good on a perfect day. But Im looking for it in lightweight but can not find it in Sweden at the moment. Lighter weights. Quicker to ignition, less resistance to turn due to less density/volume/weight. Post Production Profiling (PPP) will always play a part in flight as well. Often, a hyper flat disc will be faster, responding faster in both sides of a disc's flight. Less glide due to less airspace from flatness. Domey is slower from the disc taking more space for the air to have to work through, producing more glide, distributing it's turn for a longer period of time with less speed.

eh. I throw mostly max weights because I know I can regularly get them. If I fall in love with a 150g disc, I may not be able to get more of them. It's got nothing to do with being macho. I can't prove that to you, but I promise, if you met me, you would not describe me as macho. I'm just a big fan of consistency in my discs. As the video says as an amateur, my arm is not super consistent, so I ask for that consistency wherever I can get it. Disc weight is one of those areas.
@TheMakki
@TheMakki Жыл бұрын
Ideally you throw max weight because of consistency. If you can't get a max weight 11/12 speed to max distance than you need to disc down to a 9/10 speed that is more understable (such as a valkyrie or a beast). Throwing ultra light weight discs is just going to hurt your game in the long run as it is a crutch.

@@localdiscgolf I can respect that he is doing what he thinks is best for growth, and I watched the video, so I can't really say it didn't work. However, I don't think it's a good long term growth strategy. It's better to be honest and stay out of the mud. Leaves people with a more positive feeling towards you. To be honest it's not just him, I feel less warm towards Paul and Brodie since that drama too. But speculation (especially when it's nonsense like Paul saying he won't bag the Zone OS being a dig at Brodie) is just kind of gross.

I wish I could throw anything lightweight and it actually stays in the air. Really confused how you did that haha

I went into this review thinking this disc was going to be an immediate roller. Some people will demand a very specific weight. However, I think at least 10 grams is an amount where you start to see/feel a difference. The light-weight meant it flipped easily, but it also faded faster as it lost speed quicker.

🤣 I feel like the “138g Mamba” part was the clickbait! It was a video I wouldn’t have made had I not seen Iceberg’s vid! And he loved it so much I had to see try it myself!

I also think the lightweight meant it lost speed faster and ended up fading out, which was what IcebergTV said on his channel as well.

138 gram gstar mamba 😂. A 250' roller disc 😂. The ultimate disc for extremely slow arm speeds....
