In really short terms, it probably age well but long term? Probably not Drew clearly only thought about USB-C on phones and also not really long term. 80gbps and 240W may be nice and super fast on phones and NOW but that doesn't mean anything. In 10 or 20 years those speeds are probably laughable. Just think about 20 years ago. 480mbps with USB2.0 was high-end and SUPER fast. And now those speeds are a bad joke and people make fun of it. But with this law, all companies are forced to use USB-C and won't develop a new, much better port like USB-D or whatever.
@Raja995mh33
@Raja995mh33 Жыл бұрын
@Farb S yeah in theory 🙄 in practice, this stuff takes YEARS. And the results are open. Which changes nothing about the fact that no one will develop a newer, better port because they would have to wait YEARS for an updated law and can't even be sure if it will be changed. And who says that USB-C (the port/connector) is perfect and will never need a physical update? I have huge doubts that the port design will have limits at some point.

Well on that last part, MKBHD missed mark completely. I agree with you Drew. USBC has long future inside mobile market. Even if we arrive at the moment when better connector is needed (e.g. USBD) there is absolutely nothing that will prevent its adoption: 1. EU legislation doesn't prevent creating/testing new connectors for the purposes of R&D, so in labs you can very much test something better for the future. 2. Legislation is not set in stone. If we get USBD which will transfer 1TB/s of data, 16K video res and 500W of charge inside one simple cable, nobody will stay in its way if its an open standard like USBC. I do hope Apple won't go port less. Its retarded idea considering they market it as a recording device. Its ludicrous now with Lighting, basically you're forced into Cloud storage like Mega, Dropbox etc to transfer data, but what's the point of using Cloud-transfer bridge when you want to copy file locally? It doesn't make any sense to go port less for most people. Especially if iPhone is the only Apple device you poses. As for Apple whining that they are forced blah, blah. They shot themselves in the legs and arms and basically any other organ many years ago. When USBC was new and locked behind royalties. They had a rather long period when they could lead the charge (pun very much intended) of USBC to the market, but they did what Apple always do. Walled garden, delay, milk $, repeat. Fortunately that $hit is coming to an end. No more Lighting is at hand.

one crazy thing is that qi charging (the base for wireless charging including mag safe) does have a data transfer standard so if apple either teams up or makes their own data transfer protocol then the cable would be obsolete because you could charge and transfer data which is really all lightning does edit: most qi chargers do not currently support data transfer but it is possible especially if apple wanted to go with that path

MagSafe it’s just a cable with a magnetic connector on the end, so why going to extreme lengths to make “wireless” on par with a regular connector when you already have a perfectly functioning connector in the first place? Also, have you seen the prices of MagSafe cables? And considered how many more resources are going to make each of those giant pucks full of magnets and copper coils? Energy waste while using them? Just why?
@zico1024
@zico1024 Жыл бұрын
So basically, if Apple goes this route, you’d have another proprietary standard that’s just lightning 2.0 but worse. Worse in that, instead of just plugging in a cable, you take another cable with a huge disc attached to it in order to slap it onto the back of your phone, to essentially serve the same purpose. Except it’s equally as inconvenient as it’s just another cable in the litany of cables that people would still have to carry around within the Apple ecosystem. It’s ridiculous but a very Apple thing to do. And the fanboys will praise it as usual…

I think powerless would be a bad way to go unless Apple can get wireless charging speeds as fast as (or close to) quick charge wired speeds for iPhones. Yes I know Android wireless charging can be a lot faster, but I think this would be good enough for people to not complain about the speed. But most importantly, I am not a fan of MagSafe charging because of how bulky the puck is. I can cram a lightning or usb C cable in my bag easier than the MagSafe puck. Don’t get me wrong, I use the MagSafe Duo Charger at home and when traveling since it’s so small, but I have that lightning cable and a 30W brick I can plug my iPhone into if I need to fast charge my iPhone before going out for the night. Lastly, the MagSafe puck is one more cable I need to bring with me. I can charge my 16” MacBook Pro and iPad pro with USB-C, my Apple Watch and AirPods Pro 2 with the Apple Watch charger. Why do we need to add a 3rd? I will still keep it around to charge my AirPods Max as well as other lightning devices more efficiently and quickly than wireless charging. But if we could move everything to USB-C and the Apple Watch Charger, that’s 1 fewer cable I need to take with me. And maybe one day, the Apple Watch can charge on a Qi charger.

I think I disagree on your point about apples response during the interview, just bc it’s too hard to analyze and try to read the exact wording and context of the answer, so I’m on the fence with that one. And as for the “what if a better connector is invented?” Argument, the only thing I think could actually improve usb c is making it magnetic, other than that, yea there’s very little to improve on, especially when you consider thunderbolt 3/4

Think about it. If there were gonna go portless, they wouldn’t have been so vocal about this law cause it wouldn’t have mattered. Also the law was essentially targeting Apple, and if they try to work around this, the EU probably won’t let that slide since that defeats the whole purpose of said law. What I COULD see, if Apple wants to be stubborn, is an EU version with type c and lightning in other areas… I’ll be importing if that happens

If Apple switched to USB C for iPhone it would irritate and excite lots of people. I would mostly be annoyed because I’d have to switch out all my cables I have for my iPhone. I’d still be able to use them with my iPad though. Unless the Lightning to USB C port was sufficient.

Additionally, 200W charging for phones is insane, even if we factor in potential new battery technologies. Because higher charging power requires either higher voltage or higher current, and especially higher current would require bulkier connectors, which isn't a trend I realistically see happening. Higher voltage is a bit more hit and miss, because the limiting factor there would be the distance between the pins to avoid them shorting out. The headroom there, even with USB-C as a connector is much higher. And we aren't even talking about what those high charging currents/speeds do to current batteries, or that it simply just isn't needed. Currently phone batteries fall somewhere inside a 10-20Wh hour range. Meaning, even bigger batteries can be charged with 20W charging in about an hour (minus charging efficiency). If we very generously double, or even tripple current battery capacity, while trying to keep the same charging times, we would end up requiring 60W chargers. Which is something USB-C can easily provide already. Considering phone SoCs have become more and more power efficient, a trend that very likely is to continue, you'd easily get multiple days, maybe a week of use with this hypothetical battery technology, furthermore reducing the necessity for 100+W fast charging. Not to speak of how much you probably are degrading your batteries with extremely high charging rates, making those rather gimmicky. And we haven't even reached the data transfer speed argument. Currently, even many USB-C phones still only use USB 2.0 speeds for their data interface. Current USB-3 standards provide orders of magnitude faster data transfer rates, and considering how much the speeds you can achieve over USB-C have already improved since its introduction there is no reason to assume we are about to reach the upper limit of what can be transferred over the connector in the close future. I just don't see a world where 5 years down the line USB-C becomes a bottleneck for phones, given how long we've been stuck by 2.5-5W charging, USB 2.0 speeds, and the basic physical limitations of battery technology and necessity to move huge amounts of data off of your phone.

When Apple took the charger out of the box I thought that was a play to start upselling chargers but nobody talks about fast charging their iPhone. On the other hand I doubt most iPhone users know that you shouldn't charge your phone overnight but it doesn't matter if the battery can't charge overnight because the charger is too slow and the battery is too big

They won’t release a portless iPhone because how would you recover the software on an iPhone that has a bootloop or has corrupted software or doesn’t turn on properly and stays on the debug mode? You need a computer for it and there is no portless data transfer patent for doing those things.

What About A Magnetic Port, Similar To The MagSafe On A Mac That Just Clips On With Magnets But Is Flush With The Bottom, It Could Have A Rounded Rectangle (The Size Of The Plastic Part That Holds The Male Lighting Connection On The Cable) To Indícate Where To Connect. They Can Have Whatever USB Connection Built In & Just Magnetically Charge With A Cable For A Faster Charge Compared To MagSafe On iPhone, Also Have The Same Transfer Speeds As USB C Available. It Can Be Called ✨ MagCharge ✨

Some people argue that usb-c ports are more fragile, because it’s a male-female port. Lightning is a true female port, which is basically impossible to break. Furthermore, lightning “snaps in” whereas usb-c purely relies on friction for the cable not to slip out. For a device you charge every day and possibly move around while charging, this could damage the port over time or at least causing the cable to slip out unintentionally after some time. I didn’t find statistics about that. Only that usb c is supposed to last 10,000 plug-in and out cycles (probably in laboratory conditions), which would be 30 years on daily charging. Yet “my usb c port is broken” shows much more google results than “my lightning port is broken”.

Well to counter your first point. The context of the question is iphones but the wording itself was is apple moving to usb c. She quoted the law stating all consumers electronics including phones will need type c, but the question didnt straight say “will apple make usb c iphones?” So there’s absolute grey area in that question

I want a usb c iphone, i do believe apple will make one. I don’t believe that apple will settle at making usb c phone. They will make portless ones someday and the question is only how many yrs will usb c stick around for iphones. Im predicting a type c iphone in ‘24 not in 23. And then maybe 2-3 yrs with type c before portless

Also on your point about one cable solution, if the magsafe puck had a type c port then it wouldnt matter. So say apple makes the iphone only charge via type c, if the magsafe puck had a type c port, then ppl could still use any usb c cable to charge a device be it apple or android, just apples wouldnt plug into the body of the phone.

Dude, thank you. I generally agree with everything MKBHD has to say about tech. But his points on his USB-C video rubbed me the wrong way. To the point of "let the engineers figure this out", Apple's insistent on a proprietary port isn't because it's a better technology but because it is more profitable. Also, your last point is spot on. I have earbuds, over the ear headphones, keyboards and a vape that all charge via USB C. If they brought that standard to the iPhone I would actually consider buying one for once.

It's possible/likely that answer they gave in the WSJ interview was intentionally vague. But after it happened and the internet exploded with "OMG IPHONE IS FINALLY GETTING USB-C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" does Apple really have it in their hearts to either dig their heels in and make us use Lightning for another year, or go portless? The people have been more than clear about what they want. If Apple can be bullied into changing the battery percentage indicator, we should be able to convince them to give the iPhone USB-C

I just think going to USB-C makes sense for Apple given that they’ve introduced the ProRAW format for video. Those huge files take forever to transfer to a computer over lightning. Until Apple comes up with a better way to quickly transfer large files, USB-C is the best option. I don’t think portless is a viable option right now.

Really wish people could cover the reasons why we professional filmmakers need a USB-C port on an iPhone. Being forced to use a wireless standard to transfer our footage is problematic in more ways than one. Why can't Apple just use Thunderbolt as their replacement for Lightning? They own the copyright to both and can still charge slightly extra for the cables. Just bump the bandwidth to where we don't have to fiddle around with transferring a 4K piece of footage for 10 minutes at a time.
