I remember when Yoshinoya showed up in LA. The menu had the beef bowl, plain rice, and sodas. That's it. they added a chicken and veggie bowl. Then misoshiru. They gave out plastic spoons with the soup and it curled up from the heat.

In the United States where I reside, my local Yoshinoya’s most recently updated menu was established somewhere around 2014 and it offers options like…angus beef instead of normal steamed beef and something regarding shrimp. They still serve subway cookies too, so that’s cool I guess. I mean, I still love it for what it is; my family has ordered from there since I was in elementary school so U.S. Yoshinoya locations have some sentimental value to me. But, if I had to choose between the OGs and U.S. Yoshinoya food…I would pick Japanese options any day.

Fun fact. "Japanese Curry" is actually a milder (for the Japanese market) "Chinese Curry", which is named as such because it was invented by Chinese takeaways in the UK, mixing Indo-British curry traditions with Chinese spices and was usually served with chips. It made its way back to China, and then to the rest of Asia. You can still get it in Chinese takeaways in the UK, and "curry sauce" is a common condiment in British chip shops. So this is actually a fusion of British, Indian, and Chinese food traditions in one street-food type dish.
