Restomodding is good where it saves cars that would otherwise end up as scrap. It also saves designs which could never be repeated because of modern crash safety

I've owned one before, but I'd love to restomod a Corrado VR6. Also a Audi S2 Coupe would be awesome.

Never buy a car that you won't drive! They're made to be enjoyed everyday, not to collect dust. 😊
@fraserwright9482Ай бұрын
Time is valuable, you get very rich people and if they are the top dog. They may not be able to take a week off to drive to Ronda and the Ring. Yes they may own or collect things, there are 300 people wanting Singers at 1.1m so there is a market for it.
@tonymoreton7166Ай бұрын
It's dead interesting about people who have (proper) loads of money and then buy expensive cars but then don't drive them because of the value & likely depreciation. I assume it's because most of those people have made the money to enable them to afford the cars, but ultimately for them, the objective is about making & showing the money, rather than wanting to drive the car they can now afford. I want to drive my M3, 360 and wife's Boxster. And, I know driving them a minimum of 3k plus miles a year each, keeps them sweet. And, the smiles per mile, :-). Sod any depreciation, or maintenance costs, while ever I can afford it.
@fraserwright9482Ай бұрын
But that isn't a uniquely rich guy issue, you have guys with no money, lots of cars or motorbikes who never use them. If wealth regardless of its acquisition was a measure of success or taste then that would be understandable. Most really rich people tend to have quite conservative cars but very nice interiors or specific personalization. The easiest analogy would be shoes, you might have a range or multiple pairs of the same style. The restomod is like having a sneaker made to order. You aren't playing in the NBA though, it's just fashion. No one is racing a Singer at the Ring or Brands hatch as it's not disposable even for them, they waited 5 years for it.

If you to USA and other KZbinrs you see 60’s / 70’s muscle cars ready for restoration but they get modern power trains / chassis updates in original bodies referred to as Restomod. Different to Tuthill and Singer. Great podcast chaps!

I recall a company back in the 1970's or 80's called Vicarage who effectively restomodded Mk Jaguars. I agree with Joe regarding concors events...they don't float my boat. The car I would like to make perfect would be an Alfa 4C. More Pat please!
@malanne1Ай бұрын
Restomods came from american muscle like a 69 camaro or 65 mustang and putting the newer engine into it and total custom interior. Like Boyd Cottington or Chip Foose. Singer just did it to the 911, but much later. Singer did it also better and by using top quality materials and proper engineering.

Love the Restomod scene. The variety and choice is amazing and Only opinion these cars are so much more interesting than the over sized and overpowered Supercars of today’s era. Agree also that 400bhp in a smallish car is plenty for the road. I can’t wait to see the new TWR XJS. This would be high on my list of ideal resto cars and a pleasant change from endless 911 based cars.
@fraserwright9482Ай бұрын
Restomod came out of the 80s, but its based on hot rodding. Making your old car perform like a modern car has always been a thing, especially for small production cars. The Porsche stuff came about because people would get more return from a 911 as there is a large market. AMG/Brabus and Mechatronic have made old Mercs with newer running gear since the 80s. Magnus did not invent it, he is famous on social media.
@owenmcdonald5922Ай бұрын
My idea of restomod is to take an older car and fit up to date brakes, suspension, and power unit without massive increase in power. Something like an 80's BMW or Mercedes. Leaving it looking like a nicely maintained original.
@frankyork5808Ай бұрын
Restomods (restored and modified) originated in the USA. Restoring an old car to make it mechanically modern whilst retaining their original looks. Tuthill and Singer are not restored cars that have been modified. They both build brand new cars.

BMW E30 325i cabrio restomod dream car
@fraserwright9482Ай бұрын
Easiest way to look at Restomods is to look at what they are not. You don't see them at track days or the Ring because if you crash it you are waiting 2 years to get it rebuilt, no matter how much money you have. A race car is disposable body in white and evolved through racing out of function or class limitations. Its personal expression in the same way a hotrod with custom paint is art.
