Depreciation.... You can't really measure by electric cars as they were mostly bought due to tax advantages. Take the i5. For £50k (even if it was £100k+). You can get a slightly used, 3 year old, 2021 M5 for the same £50k. There is no historical data with electric cars, even at £50k depreciation you don't know how further it can go? However you know a 10 year old M5 is £25k. So you know, more or less, you will lose £25k in 7 years, £3,500pa. This is why Porsche are so good, There is 50 years of historical data with the 911. If you buy a 3 year old 992 C2 for £85k you know a 13 year old 991 is £40k. So you will lose £4.5k per year (approx.) For a Taycan you don't know, its a risk. Also Luxury & supercars are mostly bought by wealthy folk. They change them when the next new thing comes along. They lose money, they are not too bothered. Subsequent buyers are usually not as wealthy (unless its a fan-boy car) so the prices have to reduce to the affordability of the next buyer. Who will also take running costs into account. Cheap to run, reliable, ICE, family cars up to 10 years old are popular and sought after. They barely depreciate. But us petrol heads don't want them. A 50k mile 18 year old Maserati Quatroporte for £10k will always appeal to us, but to 99.999999999% of the population it wont and that's why its cheap, it has to reduce to a point where someone, anyone, is tempted.

I think its hard to quantify depreciation if you never buy a car new, either for work or pleasure. Had we had this conversation 20 years ago the formula would be the same. No one bought a CL500 or 996turbo, 745i BMW, A8, Bentley Flying spur or Panamera and not expect to take a bath in 3 years as that was the warranty window. At the moment you get a tax write off for buying a new EV, i don't get it for a used vehicle. I can't offer a 4 year old purple 8 series as a company car to staff even if they wanted it. Where they are a bit mistified is why people bought Priuses, who then bought Teslas and then Taycans as they never buy new cars, they only go on launches. Why shop at Tesco's when Gordon Ramsay is giving you lunch?

Awesome video chaps. Would love your advice if possible. I'm after a premium SUV £25k-£35k that I wont loose my shirt on for 12-24 months. Reasonable road tax sub £400. What would you go for?

2021 cars. Q5, X3, XC60, NX or the GV70 are all very nice family SUV’s. Some are definitely holding their values like the Lexus.

I was in the same situation and went for an x4 M40i. Either of the 2021 cars will hold their value relatively well, providing you look at higher spec/trim.

Think there are multiple factors driving high depreciation - list prices in some cases have inflated substantially post COVID. I bought a new car in summer 2021 that now has a list price 30% higher than when I bought it. The projected cash residual after four years today is almost exactly the same as for the car I bought in 2021 after the same period of time. There’s definitely an issue with EV, and sales volumes of the premium models have been flattered significantly by the tax incentives - they will start to diminish however, and the private market will have to be convinced - that’s not really happened yet, and I think premium EV values will continue to be very soft (look at the new rules on road tax that are coming). Interest rates are also an issue for those using financing - in real terms, they’ve nearly doubled, and the manufacturers don’t seem minded to subsidise them. My offering on “worst depreciation” is the Ferrari 296GTB - now retailing below £200k for a car that’s barely used.

The i5 you referenced starts at £75k, so someone added £25k of options, which they will rarely recover this. Also, as you know with EV’s - it’s often cheaper to go new due to the tax savings, so there needs to be a large drop in the used value, to make it attractive to buy.

With regards fuel prices there used to be a site that sent daily updates on the price of fuel in the local area wherever you lived but it closed down I think as the updates stopped. It was a great help to many I am sure. Another easy listen guys keep them coming.

Depreciation figures are often bollocks and always have been, and it’s down to discounts. The cheapest Fiat 500e’s on AT are over £10k for a start, and new ones can be had for £24k. Not fantastic, but not as bad as it at first appears.

It looks like the manufacturer is producing far too many cars to devalue your existing model. Stop buying new cars. Let the manufacturer run them into used cars. Is it £50k loss of £50k overpriced. I believe the motortrade is the cause of inflation. A newer model must be £20k more than last year's? The product has got worse yet production costs more?
