Restoration a broken sword - Restoration old rusty sword - Restore Japanese sword
Welcome to my next restoration tool. a Japanese-origin sword, it was rusty and broken in half. I restore it shiny and gave it a solid wooden handle. I am not an expert in the field of tool restoration. But I love this job. So please comment and contribute to me to learn more for the next project. Thank you for watching the video. Have a nice day. Do yourself and the whole world a favor: reforge that whole katana from scratch.welding the pieces together like in Lord of the rings is something stupid. You don’t get a solid construction, and even less if it is a katana. Watch Man at Arms katana videos so you learn how to do it, please, pleas, please!!! And treat a katana like so!!! Don’t treate it roughly!

Just here Chillin unfortunately, the “restoration” is mot even functional. One direct strike against anything solid enough and it will break in the spot where he welded it. It still has a cool finish.

Would recommend full normalization next time. Meaning taking up to orange or light cherry red and letting it cool in or in the forge if possible the goal is to slowly cool down the metal and let the internal crystalline structures take on a more natural arrangement. This will help release the stress and tension deeper in the metal. After that a hot oil quench would heat treat the sword while lessening the chance of a fracture

First of all, the source of this would not be a Japanese sword. The basis is clear from the warp of the sword, the way the blade is attached, and the shape of the grip. Belated comment: Since that was a replica of a Japanese sword, no harm done. The blade polishing was only about half complete. Watch other restoration videos. The trick is to use progressively finer grit emery papers until you can no longer see scratches on the metal surface, and then polish it. The way you hardened the blade was also bad, since you heated it up inconsistently. To be strong, a blade needs to be heated and cooled as a single piece. I wouldn't be surprised if that blade shatters someday. You did okay when you started carving the socket for the handle in the two blocks of wood, but again stopped too soon. The halves should have fit against each other with no gaps. When securing the handle, since you were making a permanent one, it should have been pinned with brass rivets, not screws. Glue is optional. If you make a well-fitting socket in the handle, it doesn't need glue. Real Japanese sword blades were held in place with a single bamboo peg. Normal wood screws can weaken and rust, and might break eventually. They can also tear out of the wood.

Broken sword would break again at the same area...
@PariahUnknown
@PariahUnknown 5 жыл бұрын
Depending on the metal of the sword, and the type of weld. Frequently, you end up having things snap near a weld because the weld is stronger than the base material. In the case of a sword, as long as it is well made, a sword shouldn't snap (If you look at the "broken" area, it actually looks sawed in half, not broken). As long as the sword doesn't receive extreme, concentrated stress, like from a bullet or something of that caliber, it should be fine.

I haven't even finished the video yet, but I was curious about the comments because it was obvious what I would find down here. You're trying, you're learning, and you're sharing your experiences. What more is there? How else do we grow? Has anybody even bothered to notice that he's thanked EVERYBODY for their comment, even the overly unnecessary negative ones??? Does that count for nothing??? Look man, you're clearly a good person, and you already know more than I do even though I just fix things around the house mainly, but this stuff does interest me. One day I might want to expand my knowledge base so I can fix more. Since nobody friggin talks in person anymore, showing what you know and fishing for constructive criticism is a great way to progress. I commend you for putting yourself out there. Thank you for sharing and I just subscribed! I hope to follow you on your journey as you continue to grow your library of knowledge and skill. Take care and stay positive buddy!

I just came across this and want to throw my 2 cents in. I applaud you for getting it back into 1 piece. But from the finishing is where it went down hill: The blade is all scratched up. If getting professional sanding equipment is not feasible, my I suggest using finer grit so you don't end up with so many scratch marks. The handle could have been done more safely with respect to the guard. I saw that the orbital sander left quite some damage to the underside. Although carving would have been the best option, if you want to keep using the sander, remove the handle for shaping. Phillips screws do ruin the look. If you can't replicate the original, then do try rivets like someone else suggested. Or at the very least, use the leftover sawdust to cover them up. Try to see how the leather is wrapped in the handle next time around. It looked to be in good shape (and the wear would help give the restoration character). Replace the original binding. Figured enough people have just blankly tried insulting you or ripping you a new one. I love katanas and just feel that this could have been finished better. Hope the constructive criticism I have tried to give you is if some use.

Relax people, this sword is not a true nihonto. The tang is completely wrong in form, this is an old Chinese replica. The hi (fuller) is also far too wide, the hi-machi and mune-machi (edge and back notches) do not line up. True nihonto rarely snap in half like this one did, they tend to have the hardened edge crack through where then the soft spine bends or even twists. He also reheated the entire length, which would likely remove the hamon entirely if it ever existed. Which means this is likely monosteel, which he did heat to relieve any pressure on the steel instead. Most Chinese replicas are made of monosteel that us uniformly tempered (if tempered at all) because it is cheap to do so. If you want to learn more about japanese swords, there's several communities online that are dedicated to such things. Look 'em up! He is just having fun restoring a Japanese-style sword. I would say more power to him as long as he doesn't try any of this on the real thing! Of course, if its broken already, its more a study piece to begin with.
@kevinarein9495
@kevinarein9495 5 жыл бұрын
Aaaaand even if this were a true nihonto, even not broken, the edge geometry is completely off and its so terribly out of polish that you'd spend more than its worth to have it properly restored. It looks to be a wakizashi (under two feet) which means its potential value is a lot less. For every one katana out there, there's three or more wakizashi.
