@@dtrestoration8590 it just grieves me to see antique brass or copper get scratched up and painted or antique plastics they should never be the value goes up tenfold with original patina or shall we say green tarnish but sometimes barraso or buffing compound maybe the only way to preserve the piece when copper or brass or silver forms tarnish it protects the metal.

If your actually going to use the machine or sell it at useable you need to repack the bearings with grease otherwise the bearings will tear themselves apart with metal on metal rotating over and over again. I learned the hard way some bearings you replace others you can repack. I freed up a yz400 motor with kerosene but didn't know when I was younger it takes the grease out as well as the rust even in sealed bearings and I ran it without replacing the bearings and the motor grenaded after 15 mins of running it.

Overall I liked the video. You might not have shown it, but I was wondering if you measured the backlash on the worm gear before disassembly? I would have used a gasket on the head as that might be part of the backlash clearance.
@rickdaniel1707
@rickdaniel1707 4 жыл бұрын
The things under end caps and gear housing head are not gaskets, they are shims to set the worm gear centering, end play, and backlash. Under heavy loading this is critical. I worked 15 years for a company that manufactured worm gear drives.

Painting without first using a primer wasn't expected that finish will not last long. Leave the casting marks alone, it's part of the old-timey charm these things have. keep in mind its an industrial unit meant to work hard rather than look good and that has a beauty all its own. Covering it up with body filler is a shame. Also not repacking those bearings is going to cause them to destroy themselves if you try to use this thing at any speed other then hand cranking it and even then I have doubts. Your approach was solid though I did enjoy watching you dismantle it although I wish you had a full complement of tools at your disposal but that's not your fault. Interesting video despite the caveats. For one the component isn't common and there's intrigue in that alone. Secondly, you were kind enough not to play music through the whole video, thank you for that. Lastly, you're out here doing "SOMETHING" which is more then most detractors can claim. If you stick with it and educate yourself on the process you got a shot. Good luck to you sir, you've earned a new sub.

Well certainly an interesting approach for making this gearbox useable again. But still plenty of points you might consider changing doing this the next time. Whats good: proper cleaning and slow and careful disassembly. Everything came back together as it should. Points i would consider doing better next time: paint job, seals out of a tube. All in all i probably couldnt have done it much better. Considering i have no garage and very few tools to handle it. Hope the gearbox will last you long time. Greetings and all the best to you.
