As a professional sound installer I installed no end of these back in the day in restaurants, bars, kids clubs etc, and had no end of issues especially with the bass drivers burning out. After re-visiting a number of installations several times to replace the drivers with genuine Bose units we eventually opted for a cheaper generic driver and never had a moment's problem afterwards. I always thought they were overpriced and under-engineered, though they sounded sort of 'OK' when they worked. Venues only wanted to install them because of the badge on the front.

sure. Bose, Sony, Shure, Seymour and Duncan etc, all famous brands are overpriced. You can get the Chinese knock-offs and they work well enough.

I don't agree with you, I believe you don't think about the durability time! I have a bose 3 acousmatic and they are no less than 27 years old, what equipment lasts all this time and costs little? Then he slaps the old Bose plastic surrounds on and will sell them as Bose and not what they are - cheap standard enclosure with a cheap cone - not up to Bose standard (Bose used to be good...these days...not so much). This place is repairing and flipping broken electronics for a quick profit. There is absolutely no craftmanship in what he did.

0:54 At this point, I'd toss the stamped steel speaker basket and the injection-molded ABS pieces into the respective recycling bins and sweep the particle-board crumbs into the garbage can. A pair of Bose 301 - IV sells for around $200, the value of your restoration is multiples of this amount.
@colbydmay8 ай бұрын
Good video to learn about how these things were originally assembled. I picked up a pair of these used a few weeks back, in pristine shape. But today playing the Bob Ludwig-mastered first vinyl pressing of Led Zeppelin II revealed their biggest shortcoming--plastic in the build. I knew about the plastic, of course, but didn't know how this particular application of it would reveal its weakness. The record is "hot", with strong bass, and at moderate volume the plastic end pieces buzz with a nasty resonance. The tweeter and midrange speakers seem to be the only things that could buzz independently, as they're screwed/bolted into their plastic "carriers" or cages or whatever they're called. I may check that out and see if I can squelch the buzzing by wrenching them down, but I'm not optimistic. I know now why the three series of 301s prior to the series IV are viewed with more favor--much less plastic in the builds of those speakers, though I wouldn't say they're robustly engineered by any means. Even the subsequent series V model looks to have less plastic than the IV. At any rate, thanks for providing insight as to why these crappily-made speakers buzz the way they do.

Today everyone wants a really huge voice coil demanding serious amounts of power but I think that we could use the old systems of yesterday and just increase the amount of speakers of the grates from the past and just use multiplication and still come up with the same amount of power of the power hogs. Energy used is energy used and with so much cone it's going to be marvelous if you had 20 of these!

I once replaced the bass driver of a quad in a pub twice. First time the owner just thought the more powerful amp just was too much and his employee screewed it up. So we replaced against originals and marked at the amp, where it was safe. Next time the owner blew the speakers himself and was royaly pissed. That time the amp was for sure still within safe parameters according to specs, but in reality the drivers could not handle the stress over a whole night. It took some time to find a speaker with similar specs in terms of efficiency and frequency response, but with more power. In thise case LOTs more power. And yes, the speakers are still working.
