Can't expect same results with the two differing wood types. a fresh felled 2 year old has a lot of moisture trapped in it's cells making the wood both springy and more difficult to split. vs 30 y old oak the olfer tree has more linear cellstructure which makes cutting it easier. The axe separates whole linear cells from each other rather than ripping them appart mid cell. The wood cells have ahad time to dry out making them shrink a little easing the separation of the wood cells when struck. Found all this out after rresearching a bit, thank you for the inspiration!

You have to learn how to use this kind of axes , there is a technique , the log MUST be fixed with two tipped U shape nails , the bark must be taken of, for straight line mark use a powder paint string , while work the log must be between your legs ... my grandpa have two of this kind of axes , but with different design , they have longer and thicker handle (1,2 m and 6 x 3 cm)

Great job and it quite refreshing that goosewing is called a hewing axe, not a clickbait names like "old battle-axe" or "executioner axe" and restored for it true purpose, not as a prop :). Bit of advice, if I may: for removing large amount of wood on handles in fast and controlled way etc try shinto saw rasp. They are relatively cheap but good quality and extremely effective. Also durable, got mine almost 10 years ago and it is still sharp.

Great video! You earned a new sub. I loved how you could see the delineation between the mild steel of the body and the higher carbon steel of the bit (1:09) in the oxidation pattern. Beautiful axe. Just curious, why an oil quench instead of water? My understanding is that the cutting edge of axes are made of a medium carbon steel, between 0.04-06 percent carbon, which would need a water quench to achieve full hardness. Did you know the alloy of the bit or did you just want to play it safe? I know the blade got more than hard enough, I’m just curious as to the thought process.
@MakeNCreate6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I took a bit of a chance when it came to hardening the axe. I wasn't really able to identify the steel when grinding it and looking at the sparks. So I treated it like it would be a high carbon steel just for safety. Quenching in water is very risky since the steel has a higher change of cracking or warping. So with that in mind if the steel did harden well enough with oil, I could always try water instead, luckily that wasn't the case.
