This beautiful King SEIKO Watch came to me badly in need of a service. The mainspring was weirdly installed, bent and very dirty and the watch needed a complete internal restoration. The quality of these vintage King SEIKO watches, esepciallly the Seiko 44-9990 caliber, is really very impressive, even the barrel arbor is jewelled against its own barrel. But it was in poor internal condition and needed a really good service.
There is is not much taking in this video. Instead I focus on the detail of the restoration. It's a good asmr hit!

Great accuracy after an expert service, no wonder King Seiko, and Grand Seiko of course beat the Swiss in the Geneve tests back in the 60s.

You buy a Seiko, because you know it is the best engineered WATCH and it is also likely the best "finished" WATCH for any given price range. You buy a Seiko for history and the japanese sensibility, that it is the pinnacle of what the culture will offer you. The sensibilities of being simple yet refined, unassuming and yet at the peak level of performance. It is not to say that Rolex or "insert any other high end brand" is bad. Wear what makes you happy and if it is a Seamaster? Swim. If it is a Watermelon Underdog Gen2? Wear it like a king. Seiko is just that, the king of watch makers and the entire market has yet to learn why. Rolex lasts forever, just like Seiko but the attention to detail cannot be beaten by anyone else. You buy a Seiko because you want to be seen, but you also want to tell a story of why it is so great. Everyone knows why rolex is great and why Patek's are worn all around the world. Seiko is a sleeping giant, look at their newest offerings. It is an amazing piece of engineering and with the history to boot. I will wear all watch brands, but Seiko fits for people who are more of a discerning type.

I'm so addicted to watch repair videos. The intricacies are amazing! The skill and patience required to do this is insane. My favorite part of these videos is when the balance is placed and the workings come to life! Always brings a smile to my face.

@@richardperrettwatchmaker I'd like to think it's a positive addiction. I currently own a cheaper Bulova automatic ($400 USD). When I saw the inner workings I fell in love. What I wouldn't give to own a King Seiko! Such a beautiful piece. You did a fantastic job with the service of this watch! Thank you for your educational, relaxing and all around fun videos. Love and respect from The States.

This is a great video and immensely valuable to prospective watchmakers. It shows the detail required, particularly with the rebuild that others gloss over quite quickly. This is probably a function of this being Richard’s second career.

You are a great and absolute professional! precisely, now in a few days I must do a service to a seiko that I recently acquired. which was kept in a closet for a long time. The poor , when he shakes it a little, walks a few seconds and then stops (a more than obvious symptom that he needs a deep cleaning and lubrication), I send you all my respects and my deepest admiration and respect for his work. many greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina !!

As requested, a nice comment: Your photography is very good. Your editing skills are obviously good. That you are a very talented and skilled watchman is beyond doubt. Your sense of humor is very well developed albeit British. What else? Oh, yes. You are undoubtedly one of the most Seiko'ed watchman alive. I only wish you could devote more time to other brands. Finally, because your presentations are so beautiful, I wish you would devote some time to explaining why a certain part of the watch is built this way and not that. Explaining what a certain part is doing in the grand scheme of time keeping should not be ignored. These suggestions, if adopted, will transform your video into the best presentations on KZbin. This is it for today. Thank you Simon

A great video and a stunning piece! Have you seen the re-release? It just happened. I’m curious - when you set the hands, you set the hour hand square on 12 and the minute hand at 3? Won’t this result in a 15 min mis-alignment between the two on the hour?

Nice video. Impressive what King/Grand Seiko is putting out there. You messed up putting on the hands. Hour at 12 and minute at 3? Wow.

Haha! Hi Oleg ... well spotted ! I was confident I would get to 1 million views before anyone noticed. You'll notice on the finished watch the hands are correct. You are not just seeing sir but you are observing ... this is great! Well done! Richard

Very beautifully-done repair! I sometimes think that old King Seiko has its own charm which is bit different from the one of Grand Seiko's…

thanks for sharing. One friendly recommendation: on your closeups, if you can reduce the 'depth of field' so that it's not so blurry. It was just a little hard to look at that way. Either way, I love this watch, and good to see you restoring it. :)

Hello, Richard. Can you do a restoration for a 1940ish rolex 17 jewel watch. It will be a good instructional guide for my old rusted one. Really appreciate your excellent craftsmanship for watches.

Good Day Richard I spoke to you a while ago, I’m also from Pembroke, but I am living in Sarawak now . I know about your background in the best regiment in the British Army, but I was wondering where you trained as a watchmaker ? It’s nice to see traditional craftsmanship , I also love old fashioned engineering and think what you do is fantastic

Hi Richard ... completely self taught. Took about 4 years to 'reasonable competency'. six years to date. Lots and lots of practice and horology theory study. Hope this helps. Richard
