It`s one of the few use cases of a sterling engine I have seen that is not a emergency generator that can run on anything that burns or super specialised use cases like powering a small military submarine. Pretty smart to use that for this device.

The correct name for this type of fan is an Erickson Cycle or Stirling Hot Air Engine. A flame heats the displacement piston that transfers the hot expanded air into the power piston, thus repeating in a closed engine. I have a fan of this same design and it is a reproduction of a 19th century KYCO fan style made in England. I ordered mine new from Pakistan in the 1980s and its also blue in colour. It cost $600 Australian. I doubt they cost much more now. This fan looks as though it has been in a flood. Probably not as old as you think but the design is old. They pre-date steam engine technology and were never seen as a real power source but were useful for areas with no electricity. NASA developed a similar engine that used compressed hydrogen internally instead of air. That engine was solar powered and developed several thousand horse power. It was mounted at the focal point of a sun tracking solar dish and ran an electricity generator. Nasa even had one running a car. All experimental though. Lots of info available online. A ship was even built running the same type of engine and it wasn't successful. It was powered by coal. The engines were very large and required a lot of coal. In the end there was no room left for any cargo so the engines were replaced with steam engines that produced much more power. Great to see one being cleaned up and saved from the scrap heap. Great effort. A unique part of the pre steam era of the industrial revolution. www.reddit.com/r/WeirdWheels/comments/p22t61/1979_doe_nasa_amc_spirit_dl_with_a_stirling_engine/?rdt=65469 www.stirlingengine.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=553
