Today we are restoring a truly classic watch, the Cartier Santos. Designed as a pilot watch in 1904 by Louis Cartier for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, this watch was not only the first wristwatch designed by Cartier, but also one of the first wristwatches ever. Today, it is one of the most successful watches by Cartier and world-renowned for its classic design.
The watch in this video is a Santos lady watch, which is heavily scratched and shows signs of heavy-use. It features an ETA-movement 2670. The dial is beautifully aged with wonderful patina. We are attempting to restore it to near new condition - and in the process, I discovered an unexpected surprise inside…
As always, thank you very much for watching. If you would like to support my channel, please consider liking the video, leaving a comment and subscribing to the channel.

Shouldn't you have tried to restore the original brushing of the Santos' metal bracelet/case rather than polishing the whole watch until it shines? Now without the brushed finish it doesn't look like original Santos from the era and surely because of that it dropped in value.
@MagicWatchmaking
@MagicWatchmaking 2 жыл бұрын
The original brushing was scratched. The proper method is to remove all scratches and refinish the parts, to achieve a finish that looks near orginal. The finishing by Cartier or other watch manufacturers is done with the same method!

Many thanks for the video! Very interesting to see old watches opened up now and again. Having collected old Cartier's back from the 70's-90's back in the day...It does look like the original movement was indeed replaced. Concord Watch company made watches for Cartier back in the 70's up until the 80's I believe. I don't know who took over from there, the way you could tell is that the manufacturer's stamp was on the movement, not Cartier's name!

I don't understand one step that you did. You used superglue on the tip of the stem to glue it into the crown. Why? What if the stem just rusts it up again after many years? I will be almost impossible to remove it, won't it be? I red somewhere that some stems can be dissolved with Potassium alminum sulfate dodecahydrate KAl(SO4)2*12H2O and a magical substance containing hydrogen and oxygen, also called H2O, or more simply, water😜. It this true?
@TheBeardedWatchmaker

He used Locktite Blue which is a setting compound, not glue. It can be loosened very easy with slight heat. Better to have crown securely attached to the stem than risk the crown coming off and losing it. It is standard accepted watchmaking process to secure it this way

Regarding the movement... From what I've read/heard Cartier really dropped the ball and lowered their standards during the 90s and just threw in standard ETA movements into their watches. If this example is from that time period then that's probably why there is an unmarked/standard movement inside. Don't quote me as i am not 100% certain, it would be good to get somebody with knowledge to chime in! Regards!

@@sirbum1918 ...the fakes are everywhere. The Cartier is the classic 'cruise watch' where staff or passengers try to con money out of people. Also, Cartier movements are slightly off the standard ligne shape so that movements can't easily be replaced without an adaption of the case. The dial will be glued on as Cartier off set their dial foot locating holes. Cartier manufacture their own quartz movements in an arrangement with Ebel. Check if the case has been chopped about and if the dial is loose or glued and you should have your answer.

this particular model was not Cartier's first watch, but the first watch they produced was a Santos about sixty years before this model was released. Until 2010 Cartier had never produced an in house movement and even today 95% of Cartier watches have ETA movements.

Hi. Really interesting video. There are not that many Cartier repair videos online. I am currently working on a similar model and I have issues with the case screws as they are completely rusted and attached to the case. Have you had any issues removing them in the first place? Also, the strap bar has screws attached at the ends or it needs to be pushed out? The whole watch has been sitting for a while and there are numerous rusted points unfortunately.
@redbeam-dh5er

Just realised that the bar its friction fitted which is not ideal as there is run inside probably. Any tips and trick for removing rusted screws? I have tried small quantifies of lubricant but it has been in vain.

Couldn't watch the case polishing. Its called carreé meaning 'square' for a reason... its meant to be angled. That polishing just rounded off the case and bracelet links to look like a galbee instead
@MagicWatchmaking
@MagicWatchmaking 7 ай бұрын
I hear this story about rounded edges multiple times. In my Breitling restoring video I measured the parts before and after polishing. The lost of material was 0.007mm or 0.00025 inch. that doesn’t cause rounded edges. Also please trust me I know what I do ☺️
@1288liam
@1288liam 7 ай бұрын
'Trust me, I'm a doctor' phrase comes to mind. Well, I'm saying those bevels aren't there now. It doesn't take much to remove the sharpness of them being so small but even if they weren't there originally, you could put some back on with a lapping machine set an an angle. And yes, even one polish of, for example, a new Rolex will take away the sharp edges...and that's with RSC. Ask me how I know? Because it happened to mine
@MagicWatchmaking
@MagicWatchmaking 7 ай бұрын
Wrong polishing… sorry about your Rolex. This Cartier is gold plated. The plating can be maximum 20 microns thick. After polishing it still there. Using the lapping machine will take the gold plating away and the case must be re-plated. To match the original Cartier gold color will be externally difficult.
@1288liam
@1288liam 7 ай бұрын
They aren't gold plated. And I'm talking about the stainless steel case bevel on the cartier. Wrong polishing or not, it's RSC so they are probably the one of the best out there for their own models
@fVNzO
@fVNzO 10 күн бұрын
@@MagicWatchmaking I am inclined to agree. The edges are not quite as sharp, especially due to the brushed and polished flanks of the original case where you used the same finishing wheel on the entire case. The distinctiveness of the original edge was no doubt also due to the different finishes which is as I'm sure you know a very common technique in watchmaking. I think the polishing overall is better than leaving the watch almost unwearable but I also think you should've been more careful specifically at the case. And we are not talking about the gold bezel. You just need to be honest about what is and what's not reasonably possible. Regards.

Does anyone know the value of this watch? I had the same watch given by my mom from my grandmother. My friend saw it in my drawer and borrowed it. I let him as it looks too feminine to me. Until I forget about it and lost contact of my friend when they moved. I always told my mom that I still have it and I just don't feel wearing it very often. I hope it doesn't cost much as it looks outdated somehow.😅

Hi David, I appreciate the feedback! The shocking part was finding a standard ETA movement inside a Cartier watch, which means that somebody has tampered with the watch - most likely sold the original movement for profit! My channel is meant to be calming and relaxing, and I want the focus to be on the watchmaking process. Maybe I will do a video with voice-over in the future, but for now I am very happy with the format :)
