It bring me back 52 years ago at The Royal Typewriter Manufacturing at 150 New Park Ave Hartford Connecticut .........learning to repair and rebuilt The Royal Type Series .....Still have my repair tools at home ......... Souvenir !!!!

Sarah, you just amaze me. I have a 1946 Royal KMM and I have had it for at least 15 years. I picked it up free from an antique dealer near my town and the owner of the antique store just gave it to me free. It wouldn't type. So I took it home because I loved the look. Been trying to get it to work but sometimes it types and sometimes it doesn't. I looked underneath and there is a crossbar when moved a certain way, it would be able to type but somehow it goes into a position where it won't type. I'm sure it can be fixed. Just waiting for the time when I can go back into my garage and work on it. Weather getting better so in a few days I will try and see if I can get this thing going.

I just picked up a Royal 10 at a yard sale for $25, and the serial number dates it to 1932. It was caked with dust and dog or cat hair, but the exhaust port in the shop vac took care of most of that. I took apart as much as I was comfortable doing and used lots of small brushes, Purple Power, and Dawn dishwashing spray. A warm, sunny day helped it dry quickly. A drop of WD-40 on the moving parts is keeping it free. Looking to order a new ribbon and a set of repro decals from a business in the Netherlands.

Odorless mineral spirits on the inside, Simple Green on the outside. Patience and perseverance. Then dab some light oil in spots, like the platen rails.

Great video as usual. I have a 1946 Royal KMM that I have to start working on. Sometimes the keys type and sometimes they don't. It depends on a bar that is underneath. If I move it forward the keys work but it doesn't stay there and returns to a rear position. Have to replace the whole platen tool. It seems to wobble when I turn it. Not straight on the left end. Oh well, hopefully I will be able to figure it out and make it work.

Wow, looks beautiful and like it just rolled off the assembly line. Funny i have a 1954 Underwood Leader Typewriter, which broke and to expensive to fix and I have no trade for fixing typewriters.

My new to me 14 in #10 has the windows painted over. It looks like maybe the typewriter service shop - in Lubbock Tx, all I could make out - put their decal on the inside, then painted the inside of the window.

I bought a Royal 10 typewriter and all of the keys work but I have to hit them pretty hard. I think maybe some gunk in between the metal bits that the keys trigger is causing them to be a bit sticky so I want to clean them but I’m a bit nervous. This is the first time I’ve ever used a typewriter so I don’t want to open it up and then forget how to put it all back together. This video gives me an idea of what to do though so thank you for that! I might not polish the whole thing but I did wipe the outside with an electronics cleaning wipe and now I think I need to get mineral water and an air compressor to clean the keys/what the keys trigger (internal keys?)

Mineral spirits is what you use to clean the inside. You might just need to put it on the type basket to clean out those tracks! That would be where all those metal letter arms are- that doesn't require any disassembly

Inside the lid of a 1939 KMM I just got and am restoring there was 3 big sticky spots. Do you know if inside the lid there used to stickers of some kind? That is kind of what it seemed like I was removing. I could send you a picture! Thanks again for your channel and help!

Maybe it was the noise dampening felt inside that was removed, but the adhesive was left?

That was a We R Memory Keepers ribbon. Other distributors do have different colored ribbons! FJA on Ebay has some as does Charlie Foxtrot

You dont want to lubricate too much of the machine. I use gun oil for mine

It can depend on how much rust and where. Some repair techs will dissolve the rust using chemicals. If it's surface rust, you can try wire brushing it. You'll want to avoid either of those if it's on the painted surface of the machine

How can you tell what model you have? I have a Royal, I can see a serial number but not a model name.

I match mine based on the look of the machine. I'll take the maker's name and go into the typewriter database and try to match the looks of the machine to what is listed under that maker
