Thats what it's for. It's a military vehicle map light. The basic design is used in all sorts of applications where you need to read a map/document, but don't want excessive light to ruin night vision.were also used on aircraft and ships.

Cockpit map light from WWII aircraft. Red was primary, but could be changed.

That's a miltary vehicle map light. The apature is used to control the amount the glow. They sometimes have a filter fitted to change the colour. Note: In a military ambulance, the subdued lighting is always blue. why? If you use the more normal red low light, how can you see blood? Also they were fitted to aircraft /ships. Anywhere you didn't want to disturb night vision, or give your poition away.

This is a theatre light as it has lenses to focus and an iris to cut back the light as well as a bracket in the front to hold colored gels and such.

@@ereaster I would guess this is correct. Theatre lamps would be much more powerful and would be electrically dimmed rather than by a diaphragm that would be inaccessible during performance.

That size, more likley a military or navigationsl chart/map light. Same idea but low illuminatiion to protect night vision.

It;s a map light, possibly military or avation/shipping. The iris is used to limit the amouint of light so as not to ruin night vision, or let everyone know where you are.
