Watching this man work is absoluitely mesmerizing. Genius Boy is a perfect name for him. He's not just ripping an old piece of equipment apart, he's reassembing the entire thing while dealing with tolerances, fittings, settings, and all without a set of blueprints anywhere. He is obviously keeping it all in his head. He is a Genius. I love his philosophy of keeping the world green by restoring usable pieces to life. Amazing work. (I love his little one chicken fan club.)

This is such a fascinating piece of equipment, if it had been done correctly. Never paint your feed tables or planer knives, or saw blades, that just creates drag and it’s gonna wear off quickly anyways. Also I’m glad you didn’t lose fingers when the jointer kicked back. Make yourself some push sticks, your safety is worth the effort.

That jointer taking of half an inch off was scary. VERY SCARY. I wanted to comment the same, "congratulations on not ending up injured. Please be safe, there is no shame in it"

@@cm5838 you have that right! I have nerve damage from carpal tunnel and diabetic neuropathy in both hands. I have zero feeling in them. So when I let my right index finger relax a little too much it had a conflict of space with the blade on my table saw. Yes I was using a pusher stick but shit happens fast. I'm looking around to see where all the blood was coming from. It seems instead of cutting off the tip like normal people, I had to split mine right down the center to where the nail quit and skin took over. Aw, shit! I wrap it up in the cleanest rag I had and walked inside to tell my wife I needed the emergency room. She just grabbed her purse because she knew when I said go.... I was serious. So the doc is looking at it and says stitches and starts to get the numbing stuff out. I told the doc just to do his thing. He tells me it's gonna hurt. I'll be ok, just have at it. So he gets the Q Tip looking thing and starts cleaning it out. I'm just smiling at him. He is starting to look a bit uncomfortable by now, wondering if he had some insane guy here. I finally let him off the hook and told him I had crushed that finger years ago and had no feeling in it. He stitched it up and said that was the weirdest thing he'd ever had happen to him. The finger healed up nice but it still has a funky nail. Yes. Freakishly fast. Then you are bleeding. That's not good. Cheers Terry

It must be amazing to live in a country where you can casually find heavy machinery in the woods. And twice amazing in a rather poor country where any metal is looked for and sold for scrap. Even more amazing, this machine has been resting for months or years outside in a tropical/monsoon environnent and the wooden pieces have not rotten. Great restoration though (except for the makeshift at 37:50) of this machine.

The skill & expertise shown on this is excellent. Many designing engineers deal with a complex machines they draw up and only have responsibility on a theoretical basis. In other words they aren’t mechanics putting the equipment together, or the end user actually getting it to function, in this case carpenters. That is not to say any of these skill sets are inferior, but my gues this fellow is mor of a mechanic than design engineer or carpenter. I also think it is entirely possible that he’s never seen this Hitachi in any shape. His talent is superb. The owner of the shop that abandoned it is probably still looking for the idiot that parked outside. This machine in its ruined condition would bring around $4000 US. Restoration would add several days and bring the price up again. Very complex. Thanks for posting. 0 57:52

Set the second half of your jointer table the same height as your blades are cutting and you will eliminate that deeper cut at the end of the pass

I'm a new subscriber. Fantastic job of rescuing this piece of equipment. I do agree that metal table tops should not be painted, as the paint will wear off. You can clean them with WD40 ans steel wool. Then waxed with machine wax or car polish. This will repel water and prevent rust. Remove all rust from the inside of brackets and the bars that hold them. Other wise it will continue to rust. Avoid painting adjustment screws and the gears. As the paint will wear of and can cause problems later. Polish them as clean as you can. Tape off before painting, then apply grease only. Good luck, hope to see more soon.

Wow! he could have had a very bad accident when planning that piece of square wood. The back table wasn't set level with the cutting edge of the blades, it was to low, so when he got to the end there was a big dip in the cut.

Oh, so the exit side has to be parallel to the planer blades' cutting edge to prevent the overdigging and danger of feedback? Good to know. I would think they would use push sticks or some form of safe workholding - anything to keep fingers away from that exposed high speed planer blade...yeesh Also, I am assuming that the correct direction of workpiece is against direction of cutter rotation? I've been rather interested in a planer, but more of a want than a need, as I am more of a machinist than a woodworker

It would have been a great shame to lose such multifunctional work station. You have done a wonderful restore. One suggestion if you are keeping it for personal use, I would cold blue the bare metal slide surfaces. Regardless, nice job.
