A Scale played on the cornet by an unknown performer, as recorded by Edouard Leon Scott de Martinville in December 1857. This recording was originally unintelligible due to being recorded before Scott had added a tuning fork timecode to calibrate his recordings, but thanks to researchers at First Sounds, the recording has been calibrated to itself, using the knowledge that a standard scale was the recording topic. The original recording lasts 8 seconds ; the second half of this upload has been edited by me to hear the scale played in descending order. This is the oldest sound recording of a recognizable subject in the world, and will probably remain so.

I have a question for the sound experts: years ago, secretary Rosemary Woods stated that she had accidentally erased parts of the Nixon Watergate tapes. Back in the early 1970s the experts told us that there was no current technology to reveal what was said because some areas of the tape were erased up to 8 times. Question: has technology enabled us to now hear what they so skillfully tried to conceal?

this is probably the real "first recorded sound" unless you count the unintelligible other 1850s recordings Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville recorded earlier, which stretch the definition of "recording" a little bit. An clare de la lune claims many firsts such as the first recorded song and the first recorded human voice, but i believe this is the first real recording.

If this was restored so can they restore the other Scott's recordings that are still unintelligible?
@JimPigMuseumOfSound
@JimPigMuseumOfSound 3 жыл бұрын
It's not likely. Because the subject matter was known to be a simple scale, the recording could be calibrated to itself (ascending notes in key). FirstSounds have released experiments where they tried to take Scott's 'deep voice' recording and calibrate it so the voice stays at a single pitch, which is only a guess. Other 1857 Scott recordings, where he speaks or sings, must remain mysteries because there is no way for us to know how to reconstruct the unknown or complex subject matter.

Can someone explain the whole tuning fork thing? Wasn't he just trying to capture the waves of sound on pieces of paper and never intended for these to be played back? Did he go through the trouble of all this tuning fork and timecode nonsense hoping the people of the future could say "First" for him?
@JimPigMuseumOfSound
@JimPigMuseumOfSound 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with Scott's early design was that the result on paper was wildly uneven lines, without regards to any pitch or cranking speed. But a tuning fork would result in a uniform wave on paper that could be measured and observed. He added a second line of recording to his design in 1860, a simultaneous tuning fork set off as the recording was made, that would result in a line with a known pitch plus his more complex recording side by side on the paper. This allowed acousticians to use his device in a scientific way because each moment of the recording could be measured against the known frequency of the set reference tone. When modern researchers recovered the recording in 2008, this reference pitch was the key to knowing the speed at which to play back each second of the recording. Scott's famous "Au Clair De La Lune", recorded in April 1860, is often said to be the first real recording, because it's the first time he used the tuning fork calibration on an experiment.

Knowing that cornets are usually b-flat instruments, if this was the sound of a cornet recorded on the phonautograph, it would be more of a b-flat ascending scale, so instead of C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C it would be more like G sharp, A, B sharp, C, D, E, F sharp, G sharp.

as far as I understand it, de Martinville actually recorded the wave forms of air born sounds onto paper, definitely a first. There isn't, however, and never was a way to play back these recordings. The computer program simply interprets the wave forms as they appear on paper and composes a playback based on information provided by the programmers as to what a waveform of the sort might have sounded like, mostly guess work. We still have no idea what the original actually sounded like. It wasn't until Edison that true analogue playback was possible rather than just a digital interpretation.
@ProfezorSnayp
@ProfezorSnayp 4 жыл бұрын
"We still have no idea what the original actually sounded like." But we do, the sound wave pattern is right there on the paper. You could say that no recording, on any type of medium is the 'original sound' but it doesn't matter. Scott's paper phonographs are good as any modern digital sound recording.

This recording is a well documented experiment from 1857 made for the French Academy of Sciences in the presence of Jules Lissajous, a pioneering acoustician and chairman of France's SEIN, an association of experts that assessed new technologies for their use in French industry. Have you watched the 55-minute documentary First Sounds made in 2014? Turns out the “Au clair de la lune” recording was played back at 500 Hz, when it should have been played back at 250 Hz. They correct this in the documentary, and you can audibly hear the voice of a man, the inventor himself, singing the song. Other recordings from that same year are demonstrated. First Sounds is certainly not a hoax, but the Chopin recording you are talking about definitely is.
@ferociousgumby
@ferociousgumby 4 жыл бұрын
I can't quite believe the tempo of the corrected recording - it is just unbelievably slow. The first version sounded like it was the right speed. I don't know, with all the elaborate fiddling going on, and with autotune able to do just about anything, I think they might have found a couple of tones, or one, and made it into a three-note melody. With the technology they had, it'd probably be easy. Thus an experimental sound would be shaped into a "song", which is much more impressive and easier for the brain to latch onto. The thing is, the documentary is always going to present everything they did as fact.
