Not a "ship's compas" but a Linsetic compass used buy most military for land navigation. Use this on the water and you would be lost in the doldrums. Boy scouts still use these as well. I was trained, and successfully used this, during my leadership training in 2003. Don't oversell.

That is a lensatic compass, used in combination with a universal transverse mecator (UTM). Used solely for LAND navigation.

or keep it simple stupid or stupid simple cross country compass but does it really matter what you call it if you don't know the name you don't know how to use it but you can rebuild / restore it. i like that compass has a dog house and if I don't get my stuff done I will be in it so bye. did you know you can estimate the time of day with one
