In episode 5 of the BMW E30 325i restoration project, I strip down and restore each piece of the throttle body.
I'm not sure what happened to this one, but as I've previously restored my actual throttle body, I thought I'd buy the worst one I could find to make it a bit more of a challenge.

PROCESS:
Firstly I Made sure everything was there as I bought this from eBay with only seeing one photo. It was actually worse than I thought it was going to be when it arrived. I then dismantle the throttle body. During the dismantling process, I found a few plastic pieces were snapped, I later glued these back together. I then let every piece, excluding the TPS, soak in degreaser. After a while, I came back and gave everything a good scrub to remove any dirt or oils. Once cleaned and dried I set about removing any corrosion or rust that had built up on pretty much every surface. Once this was done the throttle body was looking a lot better.
The circular piece on the inside of the throttle body was originally gold in colour. I believed this to be a zinc plating and began the process of trying to re-plate it. This didn't go too well as it was aluminum and was possibly anodized. I'm going to look into this further and find out which one it actually is. If you know, please do let me know in the comments. It plated, but there were little bubbles in the coating and it didn't adhere well. Whilst I was waiting for that to dry I began sanding the TB with 220g sandpaper and worked my way up for 3000g. I then moved onto the buffing wheel with a finish block and finally metal polish. Some pieces required an 80g flap wheel to remove heavy pitting.
Once everything was cleaned and polished and the zinc plating dry, It was time to reassemble. E30 throttle bodies have always confused me. Getting the lever back on was quite the job, but after a lot of faffing everything was back together and working as it should. One final set screw thing with some thread lock was added and the restoration was complete.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for A LOT more E30 and car stuff in general.
P.S I chose not to port it as this is something I'd like to do during my modding series on this car once it is back to 'factory' and running of course.

Thank you, everyone, for the support so far. Expect a lot more E30 content to come your way. I have a meeting with a blasting company next week, so I'll be stripping the undercoating off soon and then will have her professionally blasted and etched. Oh, and I will be filming the whole thing! Get that bell on!

Oh and for the mating surfaces (TB to intake plenum or the little throttle body-heating-pipe) lay down a glass plate, tape on some medium to fine grid wet emery paper (400 up to 800) and do circular-8 motions. As you might see the discoloration at 12:58 the surface is not flush.

Free tip for adjusting the throttle position sensor: When closing the throttle in rest position you should hear a light click in the black box. This way the ECU knows it closed and it adjusts several parameters. Most importantly it actuates the stepper motor for idling the engine . This will make your engine idle smooth. Awesome job!
