Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Digging The Basement Floor

My mansion needs a new basement. Today I am attempting to dig out the basement, to allow us to pour a new concrete floor. I shovel dirt, run the Dingo, pour concrete, get rained out, work in the mud, and learn a lot along the way.

Condolences to your mom and entire family on your loss. I went through the same thing back in March with my father having to end dialysis. He was trying not to but his heart needed major surgery and he wouldn't have survived it.... complicated.....I gave him a kidney in 2012 that helped for about 6 yrs before he had to be on dialysis....there were loads of other problems throughout the past 7 yrs but he keep plugging through and never let anything stop him from living as full of a life as possible....he was a farmer till the end...took care of the courtyard garden at his nursing home on his off days from dialysis and took great pride in sharing the beauty of the flowers and bounty of tomatoes, radishes and green beans with all of the other residents....he always kept moving forward in life and always, always was a helper...doing the jobs no one else would do..stepping up and stepping in to help anyone in any way...hugs and love to you all.

My dad stopped dialysis about 12 years ago. He said he was ready to go live with Jesus. It was a sacred time for our family, but dad was right that dying was the hardest thing he had to do. He had time to choose the music for his funeral and joked about his last haircut being done with a blowtorch. He ended up being his own birthday candle. My nephew built a box out of cedar and we took turns holding Dad at the church. It was a comfort. The day after the funeral we spread his ashes in his favorite places. He'd been born about 4 miles from where he died, but he'd traveled to many places, San Francisco, Austin Texas, Florida, New York City,Alaska, even Iowa. I miss him greatly, and my mom. She's been gone 4 years. We reused that Cedar box and in due time I will be buried next to her. I bet dad would have liked the Cornstar videos.

Thank you for sharing your story of love. Unfortunately, I was an only child and every detail fell on me. She absolutely refused to discuss her wishes. The last hospitalization was for 62 days and on and off the ventilator so many times I truly lost count. She seemed better which as a nurse scared me since I knew it could just be a rally prior to death or it could be true improvement. I was staying with her at night, working during the days and was literally a walking zombie. She kept telling me to go home and get a good nights sleep. I kept refusing until I fell asleep in the chair and slid out onto the floor in front of her doctor. She came and gave my husband and I a visit goodbye then shortly afterwards we got the call. I know your Mother is devastated and I wish there were words to help but unfortunately there are none. Just be there for her and know a woman grieving the loss of a parent is devastating. I knew my heart was broken in a million pieces but I tried so hard to be strong. A little over a year after Mother died my husband said something so profound and I realized I didn’t hide my grief as well as I thought. He told me he was glad to see bits and pieces of me coming back!!! What??? He told me he was worried I’d never be the same. Oh my! He had been so loving and kind to me during that time. He and my Mother were extremely close. They teased and harassed each other all the time! I adored his Mother also and was so glad to have had her for several more years after Mother died. I’m sending prayers and love to your entire family but especially your Mom. God bless and watch over all of you. 🙏🏻💔

Cole, Prayers for your family during a tough time. The stairs used to be an earthen ramp into the foundation. Considering that every stick and nail was brought to the site by men and horses and that the concrete for the foundation was probably mixed with local creek water in what we would consider tiny batches today. The volume of lumber and materials for a home that size would have potentially required sourcing from different mills, which may account for the various wood sizes in the house. It would have been very unique for a rural area during that time. Fascinating.

My Dad died from renal failure (from diabetes which also brought heart, circulation, and vision issues). The nurses at the dialysis center told my mom it was no longer working, mom told the staff they (my parents) would stop coming to free up the bed. They told her no, Dad would know when to stop and that's when they should stop. 3 days later, he told her to cancel his appointment. He passed another 3 days later. The comfort in this, besides knowing he is in heaven, he is not in pain, is that it is a pretty painless way to go, as the organs shut down, the patient typically falls asleep or is "out of it" and no longer feels pain. I am so very sorry for your loss.

That poor Australian family .... To be accused of murdering their baby, when a dingo did in fact eat their baby while camping in the outback. We all joke about that in references, but dam. That was so sad for those parents.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather's passing. Please give your mother a hug and hold her close. Those hugs come in handy when we are hurting and sad. Love the work that is getting done. I can imagine that cold part of the stairs etc in winter when snow was freezing and winds blowing in those Iowa winters. We had them in So Dak for years. Everything is looking good and it seems once you get the basement sealed up it will be a goooooo for the rest of the projects. That home is going to be indestructible when you are done. It's a beautiful home!

An apple helps to wake you up like coffee but without caffeine. I like to cover mine with peanut butter. It makes for a delicious snack in the morning.
