Restoring a Mantua Chessie System 4-6-2 Pacific with Severe Water Damage

Mantua used a chemical blackening agent. A good place to look for this chemical would be a place who sell stuff for "Pew-Pew" items (edited so the algorithm does not a hissy) or a search on other places like Amazon may turn up the blacking chemical to turn the metal black. As far as the cylinders, I used Vermillion for the orange to paint my handrails on the Chessie units that I own. I would make a recommendation on a brand, but I don't think it's manufactured any more.

To add on to that, that process is called “Chemical Bluing” and only works on ferrous metals (I.E. Steel) as a rust preventative (though I am sure there is a method to do it with other metals as I went to a trade school for sixteen months to be a machinist).

First, I like that you collect things that I was buying and running early in my history with model railroading. Pretty early on I started getting Athearn, MDC\Roundhouse cars and locomotives, along with Bowser locomotive kits. Tyco\Mantua steam locomotive kits were very inexpensive in the 70's. Within the last couple years I finally picked up a Chessie Pacific, because the Broadway Ltd Reading T-1, the actual locomotive used for the Chessie steam specials, is way outside of my budget for trains after buying a home in 2023. So, to my main point, back in the 1990's, or early 2000's there was a product called "Blacken it" that caused metals to chemically blacken. Side rods, drivers screws, wheel sets, etc. I don't know if it's$r[⁵4⁴⁴⁵⁵😮😮

Looks pretty good Dan! But understand your feelings toward the cylinders. You might try some Tamiya grey primer and then color match the orange. Maybe swap the drivers with another Pacific? The video was great!! Glad the you were able fix the cowcatcher and front end!

At least your pilot is intact-ish, most have met their fate and are totally unservicable. Someone on eBay has 3d printed copies but someone should also add a coupler pocket for us who want to use their locomotives from both ends. Great job bringing one goofy looking yet reliable loco back to life!

Looks good Dan, and it runs! I'd rather have a locomotive that runs good and looks off cosmetically, than have one that looks perfect but runs like junk! If you do go back and repaint the cylinders, you might look up Tru-color paints, they might carry the type of orange paint you're looking for.

That's a nice 'HO' scale locomotive, Takes me back to my youth, The 'HO' locomotives i use now are mostly diesels. To me, 'HO' steam locomotives are a pain in the you know where, it's too much of a hassle to repair, Still, that's a nice job you done on it.

The way the Ultrasonic Cleaner works is there's some decent size speakers on the bottom of the tank that make that buzzing noise I'm not sure how many that unit would have compared to an industrial one like the one I use in my shop but the speakers make that buzz sound that's sending Ultrasonic waves through the water forming bubbles on the surface and in the little crevices of what you put in there that some how lift off dirt and grime with the help of the heat and what ever solution you use in the unit. Also one thing I will point out if you might need to put more water in your cleaner fill it to the top or you'll burn it up. What solution are you running in your ultrasonic just out of curiosity been wanting to experiment with different things. Also nice model a couple friends of mine are trying to get me into Model Railroading so yea Oh Boy...

So Dan, I watched the Tyco 4 Cranes fixing video, it was cool to me.... ...I just bought one at a show w/maint car, been looking at stuff about them, cuz', umm, that's what we do 😏 the cranes are in alot of old train wreck pics, "Johnny on the spot" to clear the way...! At least 5 of them at the PRR Red Arrow wreck 1947, ironically 2 K-4 4-6-2 Pacifics... kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6ubo5yie6qdm5o ...old vid of wreck, you can see them working atop the hill luv your channel!
