It's almost like you didn't want us to see the manufacturer's name on the side of the ax. I've changed out lots of handles in my time (since the 1960's) and never found glue necessary. It's an interesting touch, though, I admit. My father was a blacksmith, and he made a tool shaped like the handle opening at the top of the ax head for driving out the old wood. I still have and use it. Also, your handle is a work of art. Beautifully done!! I'm so glad to see the old axes cared for, like my great-grandfathers two Kelly "Registered" faller's axes, which I still use. Great work, young man.

Verry good. I know the problem. People throw nowadays forged things away because they're rusty and old. Allthow this axe was just drop forged by machines it isn't right! Forged things can live for centuries! And, with a little work, here it comes back again. To a next live. I'm a hobby blacksmith and thank you verry much for honoring our work!!!!! It's not easy to forge a double bladed by the way!

It’s more of an aesthetic restoration to my eye. I’d would have chosen a stronger harder wood for handle instead of a splatted cherry. Sanding the axe head without cooling it is also suspect. And finally I’d have chosen to polish off less of the axe surface.

Nice work. That is a beautiful axe head. I have a little (28") double bit Crusier Axe. I carry it all the time in the woods. I never sharpen both sides to razor edge. Two reasons - a razor edge sticks in wood. This is a chopping tool, not a cutting tool. I sharpen using a file - always file toward the handle. So, one side sharper than the other - but not too much taper. The other side is pretty blunt - for chopping an occasional root or some other obstacle near the ground. If you hit a rock with a very sharp edge, you destroy the edge and possibly more - you can break a chunk out of the head. However, as an 'ornament', that axe is a thing of beauty. I wish it were mine. I'll have to look for a head like that - a work of art. Nice work on the handle too.

Beautiful axe, but when you hang an axe head you set it on the handle, then hammer from the bottom of the handle.while holding the axe with the head down. Also, leave a little more handle above the eye of the axe and only cut the kerf for the wedge 2/3's of the way down. It gives less chance of splitting. Overall though, good looking axe

her: i think hes thinking about other girls him: i will restore a rusty and old double bladed axe
Thank you for a great video, the quality and lack of narration made this video. If you make another axe handle from a round, id recommend you split the wood with hatchet and wedges, in 1/2's and 1/4's. Then find the stave with the straightest grain, and using hatchet and wedge cut out the rough shape of the handle. A hatchet, drawknife, and rasp are then used in that order to shape the handle. This process is good because when you split the wood, the weak fibers fail, and the handle you are left with is encased in "survivors". This adds a degree of strength that the bandsaw removes. Once again I really enjoyed the video, and hope to see more in the future.
