The beginning of this video explains perfectly what I loved about 40k when I started playing. The great stories that came out of those games of 2nd edition were what made it so fun. Same with original Warhammer Quest. The newer games just don't seem to have that.
@rushthewash Жыл бұрын
The fact the game was so damn broken and so stupidly OP in some small things make it definitely a gentleman's/gentlelady's game: you are allowed to play stupid things, but you are not allowed to be an absolute WAAC idiot.

Cinematic moments are what set 40k apart from every other game. Trimming the crunch meant trimming the flavour, removing a lot of potential cinematic moments. That’s why I have played a combined 10 games of 40k in editions 7, 8 and 9. I like to return to 5th edition once or twice per year. Thank you for sharing!

My feelings exactl: holding your breath rolling all those armour penetration values, sustained dice, tables, scattering templates... So many things happened that you had barely any control over them beyond making decisions on where to move your attention to! It felt quite more "real" and similar to how destiny and life do things sometimes.

Don’t know if I can love this video more, but all of this is super awesome. Everything you’ve said about earlier editions really captures what made them so special, and the game these days can feel less exciting than it used to back in the days when the rules were super crunchy. Chaos space marines were my first army so seeing your restoration on this army brings back a lot of great memories.

I am very happy to see that you had some flashbacks with this video :). It is the same with other games: I used to play D&D, and although I enjoyed 5th edition, I much prefer the clunkiness of aD&D 2e. Not sure why. Same with this. Once you get used to the quirks and nonsense, knowing how to play a crunchy game becomes a ritual of sorts.

2nd edition, the best edition. Only thing I disliked was sustained fire dice and characters being way OP. We changed some rules a little. Armour saves before wound rolls, sustained rolls before hit rolls, for example you roll 3 on your sustained dive then rolled all 3 to hit dice so you might only get 2 hits for example, seemed to iron things out a bit for us.
@rushthewash Жыл бұрын
Those are very good tweaks. How do you work out sustained fire vs different cover miniatures? Roll each hit according to the cover? This "armour before wounds" is something I remember discussed quite often in old forums for WHFB. Why was it done this way, I am not sure... I think it was for making the game faster as one player would do all the rolls before the other? I also disliked Herohammer characters, but their OP-Ness also made the games smaller and faster. If you get to an agreement with your friends on how to play without going full WAAC, then beautiful things can be accomplished!
@mdrumt Жыл бұрын
@rushthewash re: sustained fire, I think you were correct that's how we did it. One change I did prefer in later versions was getting rid of sustained fire, and just rolling a weapons allotted D6, although the amount of D6 for a particular weapon seemed a bit low to me. Armour save, I guess it's a bit more thematic if rolling saves at the end for your own guys, it's your own dice roll that ultimately decides the fate of your mini, perhaps, or like you said speeding up the game. Agreed on the hero hammer models, like often we didn't have big armies so did full send on wargear to stretch to our points limit. Ultimately 2nd is still my favourite edition, it felt much more like a "sim" than later versions.
@rushthewash Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree: later edition games felt softer. We can agree or disagree about the nerfing, but it is what it is. Assault cannons in particular went from god-mode A10 Warthog gatling guns to pea-shooters. Love it or hate it, though. I like the ridiculousness of it all!
