Bob you did a GREAT job restoring this old Coleman stove. I was glued to the computer screen to see everything you did to the stove. I am impressed and a little jealous because when I disassemble things I usually cannot reassemble them later on. What do you do with all those old stoves you restore? My wife and I thought this may be your hobby or a way to earn money in your retirement years, if you're retired, that is. I am retired, but this is just something I do for fun. The engineer in me just loves the elegant simplicity of things that were designed by professionals who cared about what they were making. Coleman Corporation was one of those. Real engineers design things to last, not be replaced every two years.

Going to pull my old man's stove out of the barn and restore it. I use a propane model with my own son... but have good memories of Dad cooking bacon and eggs on the older stove. He is gone, but the memories are vivid. My Father would have love this video, he was a break fix guy.

You can also get a propane adapter for the old stove. Then you will have the best of both worlds!

Have yet to watch the whole series , looking for replacement burner base (mine are so rusted it broke) and ended up here. I have a 40+ yr old coleman i use more than 40 times a yr. I will never give it up. Lol. However it is starting to really get rusted and show its age. Debating on a restoration or leave it be. Going back now to watch your entire series. Reason why shades are different is most likely because of different manufacturers. Think about how many lanterns and stoves Coleman has made . They probably bought paint in 55 gallon drums a 100 at a time so what ever manufacturer gave the better price is what they went for .. Also paint technology was poor back then . That's the reason why these stoves and lantern founts rust so bad . Coleman made excellent products!! Just think if they had the paint technology of today's standard ( epoxy primer, base coat with ultraviolet clear coat) !!! Then again what do I know . Iv just been painting cars for 30 yrs lol... this is an old video but for some reason I love it and it relaxes me !! Thanks for putting it up!!

I restore coleman stoves as well. I have gotten to where instead of taping off the latches and handles, I drill out the rivets. Once I paint the entire stove, I reassemble and use 1/8" pop rivets. it looks super clean and is very, very easy to do. I also use the high heat paint and paint the heat tray and burner assembly silver. That really sets them off!! I even use different colors on stoves, and they turn out really good. The latest one I did was a 424 dual fuel. The tanks are silver, so I painted it leather brown and it turned out super nice!! Great videos!!

I came onto you tube just to see if there was a video about fixing/servicing a Coleman stove. And I was suggested this. I'm so glad you did this. Having watched a fair few "fix it" videos this one is by far the best and most comprehensive set of videos on the Coleman stoves. My Coleman is getting a make over and I feel now I can finally get it running perfectly and keep it running to hand to my son as my Dad did. There is nothing like the sound of a Coleman cooking lunch or breakfast and the memories that go with it. Thank you.

While I was helping my dad clean the garage this weekend, I stumbled upon a box of old camping gear tucked in the back corner of the garage. In that box was an old Coleman stove similar to this one that was purchased in the early 80’s. My dad insisted that there was no way the stove would work anymore since it’s been about 40 years old since the stove was last used. Unleaded fuel has been left in the tank and the pump assembly seems to need some repair. This video has inspired me to get it working again. Thank you for this video series.

I have picked some of the worst looking Coleman stoves and restored them. As long as it is complete, the tank isn't rusty on the inside, the body is not too rusty and the tank holds air I will pick them up free or nearly free. Having a stressful job during the week, restoring a Coleman stove is a very relaxing weekend hobby. Latest project is a 1966 425D stored for upwards of 40 years and will be going to my son for his camping trips. This stove had a grease fire the last time it was used. Finished product is beautiful and as functional as it was new.

Hello Bob, I just commented down below about the red paint. My stove needs a little more work . I did find out that it was made in July of 1971 thanks to you for telling us to look on the tab of the gas tank. There is no date stamp on the bottom panel of the stove I purchased.

After doing some plating I found Comet with bleach gives me a plateable/paintable surface. Of course I picked that up on KZbin. Make sure you rinse the fine abrasive off and out of any pitting. Nice series. And no I'm not impressed with Colemans painting abilities either. But they don't really want them to last your lifetime do they? That our idea.

Thanks for a great tutorial. No need to apologize for the length you still left me wanting more. l just got a 426D in very good condition. I found one issue where I have a drip that visually comes from where the generator tube goes into the valve assembly. The tube is not loose. Could the leak come from where the control knob and valve assembly come together and the drip is a little forward of that? Hope you can help with a suggestion.

Thank you for this series. Bought my first Coleman liquid fuel stove around 1970. (Have to go out to the shed to check mfg date.) It was a 425. Since then, acquired 2 more larger ones, one of which is a 3 burner. Have 2 liquid fuel lanterns bought at the same time as the 425. Plus, Coleman propane 1 & 2 burner stoves. Haven't used them in years. Thinking about putting them back in service and came to YT for more info, as I know they need maintenance. Thanks to you, I know what steps to take for the original 3. Appreciate, too, the additional references in the descriptions of your videos. Wish I could give you a whole bunch of thumbs up. I have two Coleman stoves that I restored a while back one of them is a two burner stove and I have a three burner stove that runs on propane both of them were painted John Deere Green mainly because that's the color I could find at the time but it looks pretty good

Thank you for your vids! I've restored 2 neglected stoves (425 & 413) from watching your videos. I'm still learning to get the paint job to look top notch -- you make it look easy! I'm wondering... in your experience, does the paint need to be the high heat / high temperature stuff? There is conflicting info online about high temp paints vs regular metal paints when repainting coleman stoves. I just used the brands you posted here but wondered if you ever seen the paint burn off the lid, wind guards etc from the heat during regular use. Thanks. 🙏🙏🙏

Sorry to be so late answering. I only use the high temp paint on the burner assemblies. Having the paint around the main burner get cooked a little is one of the little things that all the old Colemans did. To me it's just part of their charm.

Great videos. I learned I have a 1984 413h and a 1998 425.. The 425 still runs like new the 413h needs a little TLC. How ever not posting the hard stuff ..left me lacking your valuable experience. Did you realy get another 3/4 turn on the tank assembly without stripping the fragile brass threads. Dand puting the new pump seal into the gas tank seems to be a bear in my experience... Hey this videos are so helpful. When u took the stove apart. The restrictor plate was on the warmer burner. But on install u say it should be on the main burner. Which is correct?

Thanks for your (almost!) thorough videos. A couple of things you didn't cover: checking the manifold to make sure there are no spiders or other stuff inside it. Since it's been stored, critters have a tendency to crawl in there. Also, since your demonstration stove was practically unused (what a deal!), the cap washer on the tank, and the packing in the fuel valve were fine, but it would be instructive if you showed how to evaluate and change those out.

I have a 413G in really nice condition. However, my second burner will not shut off. With the butterfly valve closed I can still light the burner. Do you have any advice for me to fix it?
