Welcome to another episode of restoring Auto Alex's rusty financial mistake (AKA BMW E30, AKA Roger). We get on with handmaking a brand new jacking point which is better than OEM and get it all tied up with the sill panel (almost). We also get to that inner arch section and get it welded to the outer sill/ arch.
We still need to get it all finally welded in, but we are one step closer to getting this side fully complete!
Oh and we found more rust....

Some of your most intricate fabrication yet Ryan! Love how this is coming together. Would I be correct to assume that you were using thicker steel for the jacking point? Would be interesting to know speed and voltage when you are welding.

This is why it’s worth spending as much money as possible on a car which doesn’t need welding. Involved, even when you have the skills and facilities to repair them. Fair play to you, I don’t think I’d have the patience for it!

I've done lots of rot repairs in my day back in the 60s and 70s gas welding, arc welding, and mig. It's a horrible job making sure you don't set the car on fire, and lots of fiddly pieces lying on your back getting burnt. As I'm in my 70s I would hate to think I would have to do it now.

Another masterpiece of metal bashing Ryan. Just wondering, don't know if you've ever watched the "Restore It" YT channel, but he found somewhere (in Scandinavia maybe?) that was re-manufacturing a lot of the E30 panels that BMW have discontinued, may be worth a look?

…since you can’t wait, the orange BMW you mentioned has in fact already made several, albeit very brief and unfeatured appearances, lurking in the background on a few of YCR’s more recent videos, for instance in ‘How Bad Is It ?? : Colin Furze BMW E 30’, which came out approximately 1 month ago. The colour is loud, making the car easy to spot, hope that helps 😊

So in theory.. as far as I understand Alex made his first ever youtube video with a E30.. and he said E30 touring is his favorite. When he called you he did look depressed asf when he asked you if you could do even the E30............. would be funny tho if Alex just bins it in the third roundabout when he gets his hands on this- his so called dream car xD . Depression intensifies. Anyways Good JOB MAN!

I'm starting to think, no matter how much you are charging AutoAlex, it's not enough. He would have probably been better getting a better condition frame, acid dipping it, having you do your magic on it, then new paint and a full rebuild.

@johnmarsh2078
@johnmarsh2078 8 ай бұрын
I'm all for originality but remanufacturing a three skinned rust trap when no self respecting car enthusiast would use such a horrible jacking point. I can't see the point. Use a jack under a suspension mount or arm for heaven's sake. I never replaced the horrible jacking points on MGBs etc as they were rot traps and surplus to requirements. You'll have to flood the back of the sills with thin oil to make sure it gets between all those layers of metal because condensation certainly will when the car sleeps outside in our misty/moisty atmosphere.
@fritsified5952
@fritsified5952 8 ай бұрын
I fully agree. Some good work, but I also won't replace jacking points on my project car. Also, I will not put a seam sealer on the inside of the arch, as it takes away the possibility of pouring a capillary rust prohibitor in between those layers. It looks to me the sealer creates and ideal place for moisture to collect and hide the nasty work it will do.
@johnmarsh2078
@johnmarsh2078 8 ай бұрын
Dead right. Seam sealer harbours rust and deflects anti corrosion oils from where they do most good.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if, was YCR doing the car for themselves, they might do exactly what you suggested. I think what’s happening here is a showcasing of the art of the possible, as an advertisement of the attention to detail and capabilities of the restoration company. While it’s arguably not worth it with this BMW, it would be with a vintage Ferrari or Jaguar, where the owner feels an obligation to the future to have repairs remanufactured to original. Just my 2c worth of guessing!
