In this week’s episode I will restore this broken Xbox controller S. The cable is broken, and the shell is yellowed. Also the thumb sticks need some restoration. When I tested it I was able get it working briefly but then the cable seemed like it was completely done. The footage of the controller connecting briefly was the last time I was able to see any signs of life. But luckily, I was able to pin point the issue so I could still repair the old cable and not change it completely giving it a few more years. The shell was also not properly closed and after opening it I found some pieces that held the screws had broken off.
I hate this type of devices because as you might notice I can’t use my screwdriver set to open all the screws. I also used a correct size screwdriver without changeable tip. The problem is that most of these screw drivers don’t have magnetic tips so it’s sometimes frustrating to get the screws out. Other vise the controller was pretty simple to disassemble and there wasn’t too many parts. A lot of the parts were soldered to the board so I left them on.
Besides a little dirt the controller had 3 major issues: pieces had broken off from the shell, the cable was damaged and the shell had yellowed. I started the process with retrobighting (removing yellowing from the shell). I just posted a video on my other channel Odd Experiments. If you want to learn more about this technique go check that out. Link to the video • How to remove yellowin...
Mean while I had the controller in the solution I stated working on the broken cable. The Xbox cable is very hard to work with because it has this big plastic piece (ferrite) near the controller and the most common place for the cable to break is from where the cable enters the controller. This often leaves very little wire to do a proper splicing. Because I also wanted to restore the controller visually close to original I didn’t want to cut the ferrite off, even though I think it might not be necessary even though I have not tested it. The ferrite is there to prevent electromagnetic interference.
In order to find the broken part of the cable I had to cut it and then I tested which side was not intact. This is only good idea if you can pinpoint the problem. I could also have sliced the side of the wire open and tried to look for the broken wire. Then I stripped all the wires, wrapped them together and soldered them back together. All the joints were wrapped in electrical tape to prevent contact with the other wires. I covered all of this with black shrink wrap because the controller shell is transparent so I wanted the cord too look relatively original on the inside.
After the cable was repaired and I rested that it worked took the parts out from the retrobrighting solution and rinsed them with water. After the parts had dried I used superglue to attach the pieces that had broken off. Then it was time to assemble everything. The controller not works perfectly and looks (close to) original again.

its a shame that its a trend that didn't really continue so hard. theres a lot of devices that would look pretty slick if the casings were transparent and you could see the inner workings doing their thing. electronics arent especially interesting, other than seeing how things fit together, but could you imagine things like a clear coffee maker or a clear power drill? i used to work in a place that had this huge money management machine that counted bills and coins and sorted them, and i always thought it would be incredible if it was made of clear lexan so you could see all the inside parts doing their thing.

I've been a fan for a few years now, watching videos that interested me. I'm in process of watching all of your now, from oldest to new... I'm grateful for you documenting this journey. You're skills only get better with time and it's amazing to learn with you. One thing I've learned (from modifying and fully re-heatshrinking every wire in my bmw headlights) that could be helpful for this project is for repairing of the wire. At the end, you can actually depin each of the electrical contacts from the white plastic plug. that makes it much easier to solder individually (and slide the shield or heat shrink back on after). Also in this case, Replacement contacts are easy to find OR you can solder right there. Only downfall to this is you lose the 3-4" of wire to the break in the wire. Depinning gives you a lot more options and makes your life A LOT easier.

@Thalanox
@Thalanox 2 жыл бұрын
@@ZephyrKV Well, I have _amateur fixing skills,_ so I should probably have at least a vague sense of what he's doing here. I don't. He's quite good at this. A broken wire is something that I imagine would be quite difficult to realize I'd need to test for and even more difficult to accurately locate. I know an engineer who developed something called a time-domain reflectometer that would let you find out where any breaks in fireoptic cables are, but they don't work for metal wires. It doesn't seem to be the thing he could feel out. (The time-domain reflectometer works by sending a light signal down the cable and measuring how long it takes to bounce off. Any break in the fiber optics will count as a break in the material as related to Snell's Law, so you can calculate how far away that is.) I know I'd be asking questions if someone mentioned a thing I didn't understand, so I'm giving this paragraph as a courtesy to people. Not that anyone cares, but my classic xbox seems to have a problem with it's power supply. I'm having some trouble finding a circuit diagram for it so that the electrical engineer person I mentioned will be able to fix it up.
