Ms. Henderson's bookstore brought back memories of Amistad Bookstore, a small bookstore in Texas, that fed me such meaningful Black literature.♥

This is WONDERFUL!!!! I will visit her store when I visit Florida next year. In the meantime, I'll visit her website to buy some books!! I'm a writer, writing my first novel, and would LOVE to have my novel sold in a Black-centered bookstore; that would be awesome. Congratulations to her and her daughter. I aspire to do the same someday in my community. *PS - James Baldwin inspired so many writers and readers. In fact, I use one of his sayings as my own mantra: "disturbing the peace." Ty for interviewing this wonderful business owner. I wish her much success!!!😊

I 🤎 this beautiful Black bookstore! 🎉 Black bookstores used to be across the nation before the internet. African-American children are doing a lot better with public school reading and math assessments. Hispanic children now score the lowest on both reading and math public school assessments, largely because they are second-language learners.

@siriuslyspeaking9720
@siriuslyspeaking9720 Ай бұрын
It is not a question of Black English being legitimate. It is a question of can Black people speak the common tongue of America. Many people in the world are multi-lingual. African-Americans are likely one of the least of bi or multilingual people. Has rap music, helped or hurt or had no impact at all, on the decline in reading ability among us? Has the decline in the numbers of people who believe in religion had an impact on the ability of us to learn to read/communicate effectively? A child born into a religious family is likely to know how to read before entering school. We need to think critically about all aspects of our lives, especially our African-American culture/cultures, as there is in fact, no one culture, or way all African-American people are. We are the newest of peoples. Our culture is new and was created out of the worst of human living conditions imaginable. The subcultures we developed, are not strong. We are not strongly bonded to them, as they are so young, and often flawed in some ways, because of the inhuman living conditions and environment, these subcultures were created in. We must respect them for what they are and thus be reasonable/practical in our approach to them. We must make value assessments on the benefits or harm of all aspects of culture. For example one book in the background references the word 'revolution'. It has long been fashionable for many of us to speak of a revolution, but is that realistic? When was the last successful one of those? Don't they more often do exactly what the word means - to bring you back around to where you were? What is needed is more akin to evolution - not revolution. Restoring culture is like the resetting of society, that some people have been calling for. A great one or otherwise, no previous state of human society has ever been adequate, certainly not American society, for the enslaved Africans and their descendants.
