Just a heads up unplugging the MAF doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the MAF at fault. When you unplug it the ECU switches to a base map so adjusts the fuel to run rich as it doesn’t know how much air is coming in. So your MAF could be reading correctly but there could very likely be a vacuum leak on one of the old rubber hoses past the MAF which lets in unmetered air hence making the car run lean and causing it to bog out. You should start by checking the intake elbow and hoses around that which are easy to check if you take the air box out!

100% correct. With the maf unplugged the car will run in open loop. Ie it ignores sensors such as the MAF, O2 sensors etc.. and runs a preset default map it knows is "safe". I had the same on mine and run it MAF unplugged for a while turned out on my case to be the lower intake boot. These are common for intake boot splits, aswell as vacuum leaks. Id check and clean the ICV also while at the boots. At this age coolant system and fuel pumps are weak points if not already been done. The lifters sound pretty noisy aswell on yours. Mines on 249k miles now having had it since 80k so know it well after all ive done to it in that time 😅😅

Had multiple e46s, make sure you only use genuine sensors, they’re very sensitive, all the aftermarket sensors are rubbish. I’d highly suggest getting a laptop and ISTA installed too, gives you bmw diagnostics software, also INPA is useful as well. Can almost guarantee you’ve got a vacuum leak. Yellow oil light is the oil sensor fucked, usually disappears after start up & running for ten seconds or so.

Oil light: Amber and then disappears is the oil pressure sensor Worth checking the DISA valve. If the pin from it falls into the engine then it will blow the motor. Trust me, you don't want that... Intake boots could be split (after the MAF which run to the throttle body) Vacuum Lines. These run from the exhaust side of the engine, round the back of it into the back of the intake manifold. Then back out into the little F connector which pushes into the first intake boot. If you ever get hunting at idle or any issues like that then these can be good places to check as well as the above intake boots and below rocker cover gasket. Rocker cover gasket could be leaking, worth replacing and replacing the rubber grommets as well that the bolts sit in. Oil filter housing gasket. These go bad and can cause oil leaks. Not fun either but once it's done, it's done. Oil Pump Nut. This is a major problem on these. So it's worth doing the wire mod. Basically, it's a reverse threaded nut which you can get to by taking the sump off. If this is something that falls off, it will cause low - no oil pressure and then kill your bearings. Trust me, do NOT ignore this!! Rear subframe mounting points. It is worth checking for cracks, especially on the coupes and convertibles. If left unchecked, it will tear out the mounting point and the rear subframe WILL drop. Not fun. These are all things which any 46 owner will say to check. It is worth going over these before ragging the car IF you want a car that you know is going to be reliable :)

You can push down the mettle clip on the MAF plug and it releases the plug, you dont have to take the metal clip out 💪

I highly recommend you clean the idle control valve throttle body and check your disa valve too there’s a metal shaft that likes to come out and gets sucked into the engine. Also check all of your vaccum hoses and intake boots for splits or cracks.

I don't want to be so pessimistic but I would be wary, if there was mould/growth on the interior, it might be worth taking it somewhere to get some ozone/sodium chloride stuff aired through the interior to kill any remaining bacteria/mould, but congratulations!

You need a MAF from bmw.. cheap aftermarket ones create more issues then solving them. Same goes for basically any sensor.. this is why bmw is expensive, you have to do it propper
