Restoring my Grandfather's Watch. Tissot Seastar Cal 784-2

I restored my Grandfather's Watch an automatic Tissot Seastar caliber 784-2 from the 70's. It is my first attempt to polish a watch case so let's see if I can improve the look of this watch for my grandfather.

hello sir i have2 tissot watches first one is a 1953 version in rose gold and second one is a 1959 gold seastar seven and i must say i love tissot i wear both often and they are stunning looking vintage watches so happy you decided to restore your tissot

Good practice for the springs is to hold it down with peg wood on one side while you remove the tension on the other end with the tweezers

I do it normally with a plastic stick or rodico when I remove them. Sometime you get to confident and this when you spend a long time looking for a spring on the ground 😄

You are my hero. Just beginning to try out watchrestoring as a hobby. My first project was a tissot automatic 784-2 movement. The text on the dial js almost all gone, but I think it’s a gold seastar 7. I disassembled the entire watch without really taking any photos, because I’m really stupid I guess. The watch wasn’t running to begin with, but is now.(the escapement had dislocated itself somehow and the jewel had been filled with old lubricant that had clogged it. Think there has been a little rust as well. ) your video allowed me to put the watch back together, and I’m beyond happy :) The case was very scratched and I have been polishing it, but I’m afraid to remove the gold plating, is there a way to check how deep the gold goes without destroying the look ? :)

Great that you managed to bring a watch back to life. You need to be really careful with gold plating. Generally it is written somewhere the thickness but with time the plating can fade and become thiner. You can only do very very light polish on a gold plated watch if you don't want to replate it.

J’ai le même modèle et je suivais ta vidéo pour réparer ma montre et je vois que tu n’as pas d’ancre sur la tienne. J’ai vu d’autres vidéos ou les personnes enlèvent l’ancre sur ce modèle mais sans la remettre. Pourrais tu m’éclairer ? Excellente journée

The hair springs are difficult to find. You normally need to buy a balance wheel with the hair spring or a full balance assembly. If your hair spring is bend or damaged it can be repaired. You can look on ebay or specialised website to find the part

@@mhd786jna3 if it is the same than mine you need to look at parts that belong to the tissot 784 caliber or from the same family. Hair spring are difficult to find and even if it is difficult it is better to fix them

Tissot makes a decent watch. No they are not high end but they do offer great value for those who want a Suisse mechanical movement. Most Suisse watches are so over priced for what they truly are. I prefer a solid good running watch over a fancy looking movement.

I agree they are really good value for money. If you compare this movement to some in my others video you cannot see a big difference. After each person is different and will prefer to pay more to have a nicely decorated movement which is a real special craft

can anyone help me, i’m taking apart the exact movement in this video but i can’t for the life of me put the “tricky spring” back into place, and i am also kind of unsure of how it should be put back in. if anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated

Are you talking about the mainspring? Look on youtube you will have some video telling you how to put it back by hand

@@FrenchWatchCollectorit is the date jumper spring at 19:31, i am not sure what position it is meant to be in or how to do it properly as it keeps flying out when i try to put it in and i think i might be putting it in wrong, if you could help would be massively appreciated. keep up the channel work asw btw

@@FrenchWatchCollector i understand, it’s just the only bit i am struggling with as i’m not sure of the correct position and how to hold it down while also screwing in the plate on top, and holding the spring in place is difficult as it blocks me from being able to put the plate on top
