In this episode I'll restore this vintage Corgi Junior Whizzwheels Mercedes-Benz 280 SL toy car. I really wanted to see if I could make a new windshield. That turned out to be quite tricky. I tried also to cast it from epoxy but then I found that easiest way was to from a piece of plexiglass. I know there are vacuum forming tables etc. but I don't think it would have not been sensible to make or buy one for only this project. I'll make on if there is more need for it but I don't want to have one taking up space just in case I need one. More info can be found after the links.

For the disassembly I used the tiny drill press to drill out the rivets on the bottom. Then I drill holes in to the posts and added a thread for M2 screws to be able to put it all back together.
This project had no rust so there is no rust remover this time but I continued with paint stripper. It really need from 15 minutes to maybe 2 hours to work but I left the parts wrapped overnight because that fit my schedule the best. After the night the paint came off really easily. Only few spots had the paint still a little attached.
The windshield had a crack all the way trough and since I couldn't fin a way to fix that perfectly I wanted to make a new one. I didn't find any reproduction spares either and buying another on these cars just for new windshield would defeat the purpose of restoration because then that car would be missing the windshield. After several hours of experimenting in epoxy casting and reforming plastics. I went with the latter. I used plexiglass and made a wooden mold to press it against. After testing I found my mold was tiny bit too small so I filled it in with some tape. to get perfect results I would have needed to have the mold polished or something. But what ever unevenness was left by the mold I removed with automotive polishing compound and treated the windows with an automotive resin finishing compound. It turned out much better than I hoped for.
I used an airbrush for painting because the parts are very small and the small nozzle on the airbrush will help me to get only a very thin coat of paint. this way all the details on the surface wont be hidden under thick paint like it would with spray paint. I used a base coat and mixed a yellow color as close to the original as possible. I used water based colors because I coated everything with clear coat which will protect the paint.
I also gave a quick polish for the wheels with the polishing compound I used for windscreen. Then I just assembled the parts and it looks almost like out of the box.
Thanks for watching and reading all he way through. Leave any comments bellow and use the like and dislike buttons as you please. And remember, sharing is caring it really helps a lot with spreading the video and supporting my channel.
