I'm in Atlanta. The roof looks great! I don't have much advice on the windows, except do the math on what an extra 10 years with the fiberglass will actually save vs what it costs extra now. We kept the original windows in our 1940 house, even though they're single-pane, because for one changing to a modern window kills the old aesthetic, two the old windows are all operable, and three the cost of replacing them wouldn't be recouped in energy savings for some 20-30 years! We are planning to get storm windows for them for the winter, to help with the insulation factor. Much cheaper than new windows, and in keeping with the original intent.

I've been watching you from New Hampshire. I'm also renovating a 100 year old house and building an addition on the back. Certainly not on the scale you are working. Our whole house and addition would probably fit in your foyer, but I learn a lot about doing renovations and the right way to do certain kinds of work from your videos and others like it. I'm all about low maintenance, so I would likely have gone for the fiberglass windows instead of wood, in fact, I did replace all the windows in our old house with vinyl replacement windows so I'd never have to paint them again, but with the grandeur of your place, I think I would use wood because it just feels like anything else would cheapen the look, and it is a mansion, after all.

Hey Bob! Welcome all the way from New Hampshire! And glad to hear you’re having some fun of your own on a rebuild project 😁. You’ll have to send me some photos sometime so I can see what you’re cookin’ up!

I'm watching from the Netherlands, so about as far as Luxembourg 😉 I don't even remember how I started following you, I think it was because of a Facebook reel, but when I found you, you had about 3 video's up 😅 I am a 37 year old woman that does her own renovations, my husband doesn't do it because he has two left hands that he has to play piano with 😂 I've painted the wooden paneling in the hallway, up the stairs and the landing, put op wallpaper above it (also the staircase!) and renovated the stairs with vinyl flooring, that I also did the floors with. I still have to do the bannister, but I don't look forward to sanding them outside and painting them, the weather has to stay nice for a while to 😅
@realmikethakur Жыл бұрын
Hey Lonneke!, thanks for watching and getting in touch. Great to hear about the projects you work on! Sanding is rough for sure when the surface isn’t flat but we did that once on a hand rail a few years ago and loved how it came out. I’m sure you’re will look awesome too! Find me on Instagram (@realmikethakur) and shoot me a photo when it’s done, I’d love to see it!

Just saw your series yesterday and I've been binging ever since. Love how you and your family love helping people through these acts of kindness ❤. First off, I'd like to thank you for taking on this mammoth challenge by rebuilding instead of demolishing it and adding perfectly good resources on a landfill. Second thing; Troy, good job of being taught to be hands on figuring stuff out and making it work. That's a very rare trait these days and third off sending you and your family lots of good vibes from South Africa ❤

Watching from Virginia. Not as far as Luxembourg 😂😂 We have had both fiberglass and wood windows. Fiberglass is good for ease of maintenance. Wood does require some upkeep. I'm really not a fan of the current trend in new construction where the fiberglass windows are dark framed and the body of the house is light colored. I think it will look dated quickly. But, that's me. You do you😊 .

The roofers are doing a great job and it’s looking great I know you are excited that house is huge ,looks like they are building another new subdivision behind y’all. Nashville is everybodies old houses up and putting all new house up everywhere and people are moving in from California . These newhouses sell as quick as they put them up. They are saying there’s not enough places in Nashville for people to live so they keep putting up more. I enjoy your videos

Hey Susan! It’s pretty great to see how they do the roof. It really was breathtaking to stand up there as the sun was setting and just admire all the framing 😁

Man I’m enjoying all aspects of the videos. Absolutely no complaints here! I hope you’re going with a metal roof that has the shingle look. I’m sure to reshingle your roof is an easy $100,000! Love the drone shots! The window trim I would go with the wood look. If treated properly will last a lifetime and looks much better than cold plastic! I’m in St Louis,Mo. Loving the videos!!💯

im loving the videos been binging this series and i thought that you would have considered Metal Roofing as it will last much longer and pay off in the long run from my experience shingles are no good and since they have to be replaced almost every year 12-20 years and metal would have lasted 40-70 years before replacing but im super happy that this is a nice project for your family and i can't wait to get to the finale to see how things came along keep up the amazing work you do with everything!!!
@realmikethakur4 ай бұрын
You know there’s 2 reasons we went with shingles. 1. We had a metal roof at our last house and the guest house here. I didn’t like it. Super loud every time it rains and more maintenance than you’d think. Along with that it’s super expensive compared to shingles when you do need to fix. Second reason was that the house was approved to be rebuilt as it was by the county. We’d have needed all new plans, new permits etc. and that would have burned an unknown amount of time. Glad you’re enjoying the series! Appreciate you watching along with us 😁

I think I'd go with wood for the windows. If good quality, they can last a good many years too, and it may be easier for you to repaint them if you decide you want a different look/color in the future. Fiberglass may last longer, but they'll always look the same.
