I was given wooden handled tools from my 96 year old grandfather and wanted to restore and persevere them. Now I can! This was super helpful and easy to follow. Thank you!

The finish instructions for this I was given by an old timer was... “Add your finish in light coats. Once a week for a month, then Once a month for a year, then Every year after that. “

Would a heavy maybe power sanding work as well if you don’t have a spoke shave?

If you are skilled enough, you could use a draw knife. It would be difficult.

@@CountryLivingExperience is there a specific reason you didn't simply sand it from the get go?
@drumboarder1

I'm a totally random mostly inexperienced dude but I would imagine any lathe or just heavier sandpaper. I've asked why they didn't just sand but I assume to save time
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 4 жыл бұрын
@@drumboarder1 It would take way too long. The lacquer the manufacturers put on the handle is very thick.

I don't remember what I said in the video but you can use a 120 or 150 grit paper and that will give you a good finish.

Is this the same method I would use on a new tool handle? To get the store varnish off and then to add the linseed oil?

Make sure you don't throw linseed oil rags in the trash. They can self ignite later. From someone that learned the hard way.

The little research Ive done says that BLO is toxic and raw linseed/flax oil is better. Hope this helps.

I am not worried about it in the quantities that I have used it.
@waynewoodbeck5953

I think that’s backwards. It’s the raw that produces unsavory elements.
@MyUnquenchableThirst
@MyUnquenchableThirst 4 жыл бұрын
@@waynewoodbeck5953 anytime it says boiled, it means there are added siccatives in it and is not actually boiled at all. those siccatives are actually what make them combustible as well. never leave balled up rags in you shop. raw is just that, raw. it is basically a vegetable oil and completely harmless but takes forever to dry. polymerized linseed oil is also harmless and doesn't take as long to dry.

If you are concerned about toxicity, you probably shouldn’t drink it. 😉

Wow, this viewer is flabbergasted and appalled by your use of a plastic glove for this. Why would you????? Think your grandparents used these? What makes you so precious I wonder? There are enough legitimate users of plastic gloves around the world (medical - saving lives) that the makers will not go out of business if you stop buying and needlessly using them. PS painting iron can cause it to degenerate faster. The moment a microscopic hole appears in the paint, moisture enters it and does not them evaporate. It forms a pocket of rust that then allows any further moisture to travel under the paint. Big mistake many people make. To ensure the longevity of a tool, oil it regularly, both wood and iron.

Your grandparents may not have used a plastic glove for this, but I'm sure THEY would have been appalled at what a RUDE person you turned out to be. As to your question, the boiled linseed oil available today is not at all the same product as your grandparents boiled linseed oil. Today's manufactures add many solvents and additives, the instructions on the can say "avoid skin contact".
